Due to inclement weather, the start of Commencement has been delayed. The ceremony will now begin at 11:30 a.m.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to safely celebrate the incredible accomplishments of our graduates and honor this special occasion together.
Thank you,
Central State University
As commencement approaches, we’re shining a light on the stories that make our university community so special. Hear #HowIMadeIt from Class Scholar Pablo Oquendo ’26, who is graduating Summa Cum Laude with dual degrees in Music and Music Education.
For Pablo, the most meaningful part of his Central State experience has been the people who helped shape him along the way. From the very beginning, his section became his first family on campus, creating a space where he felt supported, challenged, and encouraged to grow through every rehearsal, performance, and unforgettable moment.
That same support extended into the classroom through professors who believed in his talent and pushed him to explore beyond what he thought was possible. Through their mentorship, Pablo was able to compose, teach, and perform in ways he once only dreamed about. Along the way, he met Wynton Marsalis, arranged music for the marching band, and served as the Student Assistant Band Director for the 2025–2026 season — experiences that strengthened both his confidence and sense of purpose.
Outside of music, Pablo found another sense of home through Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Xi Chapter. Brotherhood, accountability, and genuine support helped shape his growth not only as a student and musician, but also as a man. "The lessons they’ve given me and the bond we share are things I will carry for the rest of my life".
Reflecting on his journey, Pablo says the friendships and community he found at Central State allowed him to fully embrace who he is while continuing to learn, grow, and evolve. Those relationships reminded him that growth doesn’t happen alone; it happens in community.
“Central State didn’t just educate me, it gave me a family, a foundation, and a future.”

Every graduate has a story — and today, we’re honored to share one that reflects resilience, growth, and Marauder excellence. Hear #HowIMadeIt from Princess Walton-Battle ’26, who will graduate Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
Becoming a Pipefitter has been an incredible journey, and when my union offered me the opportunity to return to college, I knew I had to invest in myself and my future.
When I was younger, I attended college, but after having my daughter, I chose to focus on being a mom and working to support my family. Over the years, I always felt a strong desire to find my way back to school. Because of that, I was truly overjoyed when the opportunity came for me to return and continue my education.
Now, I’m pursuing that goal while continuing to grow within my company and expand the business my daughter and I have built together. Being able to build something with her while continuing to grow professionally means so much to me.
My daughter means the world to me, and I pray every day that I’m making her proud. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and for my husband, who has supported me through this entire journey. His encouragement has meant everything to me.

Last week, Marauderland was filled with music, games, and fellowship during Community Day ❤️💛
Whether students were competing in cornhole, stacking up in Jenga, or simply enjoying time with friends, campus was alive with energy, connection, and Marauder pride. Students also had the chance to support their peers through student vendor tables, making the event both engaging and community centered.
Moments like these are a reminder that at Central State University, community is more than a word—it’s a tradition.

With a heart full of gratitude, excitement, and determination, I am beyond blessed to officially announce my commitment to Central State University to continue both my academic and athletic journey as a cheerleader and proud Marauder. ❤️💛
This moment means so much more to me than just cheering at the collegiate level, it represents 13 years of dedication, sacrifices, early summer mornings, long practices, setbacks, growth, perseverance, and trusting God through every season of my life.
I want to thank my family and coaches for always believing in me, supporting me, praying for me, and pushing me to become the young woman I am today.
Through every challenge, setback, and victory, I trusted that God had a plan for my life. This opportunity is proof that His timing is always perfect. ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ — Jeremiah 29:11

This graduation season, we’re celebrating more than degrees — we’re celebrating the stories behind them. Hear #HowIMadeIt from James Delaney'26. James will be receiving a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
My journey is a testament to resilience, faith, and perseverance. As the oldest of five, raised by a single mother, I learned responsibility early and developed a strong work ethic from my family. After high school, I took time off unsure of my path, and even when I entered college, I initially prioritized fun over my purpose.
Life quickly humbled me. I faced some of my darkest moments, including the tragic deaths of my best friend and my aunt who helped raise me. Those losses took a toll on me mentally and academically, leading me to step away from school. But during that time, I had a wake-up call. I made a promise to myself that I would return stronger, more focused, and committed to becoming the man I knew I could be.
When I came back, I never looked back. I locked in academically, becoming a 4-time Dean’s List scholar, and fully immersed myself in leadership and service across campus. From serving as President of multiple organizations to mentoring youth and representing my university at the highest level, I turned my pain into purpose. Today, I stand as a graduate, a leader, and a man who refused to quit. My journey proves that setbacks don’t define you—your response does.
Upon graduation, I will be continuing my education at LSU, where I will pursue my MBA with a concentration in Project Management. My goal is to build a successful career that allows me to lead, create impact, and open doors for others, while also growing my entrepreneurial ventures in business and real estate. I am committed to building generational wealth, giving back to my community, and being a living example of what is possible through faith, discipline, and perseverance. With God, hard work, and a clear vision, I know the best is yet to come.

Oh to be a part of an illustrious HBCU band!❤️💛
I’m beyond grateful to IMM for believing in me and welcoming me into something I could’ve never imagined. Even when I was unsure of my talents, you all saw me, built me, and pushed me to be my best.
Being the only tuba girl left standing through the 4 years had taught me patience, strength, and how to hold it down when it matters most. Band gave me more than music—it gave me a family, a purpose, and space to grow into the person I’m becoming. I’m thankful for every opportunity, every lesson, and every moment with you guys!

Secondly, but not least… to Sorors of Tau Beta Sigma 💙🤍. I am so grateful to be chosen and apart of something bigger than myself. This organization has pushed me to grow, to serve, and to let my love for music and musicianship live on in everything I do.
Becoming President of the Eta Eta chapter as a Senior and Neo was not easy, and I’ll admit I was scared of letting everyone down. But it has taught me to leave a positive impact in everything I do with such little time. It showed me that with God, I can step into purpose, lead with confidence, and be the change I want to see. Thank you for trusting me with something so meaningful and thanks to my sisters for never doubting me and being there every step of the way!

On May 16th, 2026, I graduate from the Illustrious Central State University 🎓
For 1,092 days—I poured every ounce of my resolve into a single goal: leaving a legacy that resonates long after I’ve walked across the stage. My ambition was never just to graduate, but to ensure my name commands respect from both my peers and the future students who will follow in my footsteps.
The path hasn’t always been seamless, but those who witnessed my journey can attest to a transformation that is nothing short of extraordinary—not just in the classroom, but in my character as a man. To anyone searching for the spark to keep pushing, let my story be your proof. I didn’t just attend this university; I made it my second home, and in doing so, I found myself.
Thank you God, Family, Friends, Brothers of Aphi, and anyone who has helped me get to where I am. I couldn’t be more thankful for my support system and I appreciate y’all more than y’all could ever know.
