This is the opening of the Prelude to the 1st Suite in G Major by JS Bach. It is probably one of the most well-known and well loved pieces in the cello literature.

The tailpiece securely anchors your strings, creating the tension needed to keep everything together.
Similarly, building solid technical foundations gives you the freedom to express yourself musically without limitation. What technical skill serves as your anchor?

The wood of a cello reveals the story of the tree it once was—each line representing years of patient growth. Our development as musicians follows similar organic patterns, with periods of visible progress and times of internal strengthening. Appreciate both in your journey. 🧡🎶🌳

Bowing on the C string requires you to focus some on the C bout. Bowing on the C string also requires you to pull the right arm back, not out. It’s a very different bowing trajectory on the C string vs. on the A string!
Our goal when drawing the bow is to stay parallel the bridge (perpendicular to the string) so that we can allow the string to vibrate freely. If your bow cuts the string at an angle, you run the risk of dampening the vibrations, resulting in a “choked” sound.

Many junior cellists struggle with tension in the left thumb.
We know the fingers need to sink
fully into the strings to get a great sound, but squeezing tends to be the go-to and the result is
a tight sound.
Try releasing the thumb and pulling the weight of the fingers (and hand) in towards your heart.
It will release the thumb and give you a beautiful sound in the process.
Don’t be afraid to use
more of the pads of the fingers to pull in the power!

Never grab the bow.
The power of the sound comes from the arm. Once you feel the adhesive nature of the knuckles on the bow and the weight of the arm, you’ll understand that grabbing and pressing the bow will never give you the desired sound.
My student was able to relax her fingers and feel it. This is a game changer.

Why is it so difficult to get a gorgeous vibrato?
It’s all about the glide and the wide oscillation.
My student finally feels it under her fingers (and you know because she has that wonderful smile at the end!).
She’s 90% of the way there. The next steps are to work on varying the speed of the oscillation and to adjust the positioning of her arm so it relates better to each string.

RISE UP is the acronym that I tell my students to remember when they are having a performance anxiety moment. In this video I’ll show you what you need to do when that moment happens.
When you hear the word “rise up” it automatically entices you to sit up in your chair and breathe - two of the most important things you need to do when performance anxiety grips you! Remember the words attached to the acronym and it will help you do what you need to do.
“R” - Recognize that you are having a performance anxiety moment. You aren’t about to faint, you aren’t going to die... you’re just having a moment, and it WILL go away.
“I” - Inhale! You have to breathe! Take a slow, deep breath in and hold it for about 2 seconds. You must get oxygen to the brain.
“S” - Smile! It’s hard to feel anxious when you allow yourself to smile.:)
“E” - Exhale. You brought the breath in, now release it - slowly.
“U” - Utopia. Take a second and imagine your happy place. Really think about it. Scoot the negative thoughts away and focus on this feel-good place.
“P” - Push your feet firmly into the ground. It helps you feel centered and more confident.
Finally, put it all together in one big swoop. Rise Up! 😊

One last little clip from our faculty concert last week at the Cello Discovery summer workshop. I sure enjoyed working with these three wonderful cellists. 🥰
