Diane Chaplin will be teaching Chamber Music and Advanced Cello at OSI 2026!
Diane Chaplin is a world-class cellist and nurturing music educator who lives in Portland, Oregon. She appears often as a concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber music artist, and tours around the US as a featured member of the Portland Cello Project.
Great to see fellow cellist, Diane Chaplin at my ASTA reading session yesterday in San Francisco. It was awesome to catch up with her and talk about all things Cello!🥰🥰
Welcome back to another repertoire retrospective! Today we are shining the spotlight on Marie Jaëll's cello concerto that we played with Diane Chaplin last fall.
In the first movement highlighted in the video, the soloist enters with a sweeping, emotional line—Romantic-era drama at its finest. From sweeping melodies to bold orchestral textures, this piece showcases both soloist and ensemble in full force.
Jaëll—a 19th-century French composer and pianist—was ahead of her time, and her music is finally getting the spotlight it deserves. Her cello concerto is the earliest known cello concerto written by a woman composer. You can listen to the full performance on our YouTube channel. We are less than a week away from our 3rd concert of the season: "Rediscovering Marie Jaëll" featuring Diane Chaplin!
French composer Marie Jaëll wrote her Cello Concerto in 1882, which makes it the earliest known cello concerto by a woman composer. Several years ago, after the manuscript was discovered in a library in Strasbourg, the work was reconstructed, and parts were made for soloist and orchestra. But the manuscript is a bit of a jumble, and it’s not clear what the composer’s intentions really were. Diane Chaplin did additional research and resurrected the “forgotten” funeral march movement. Her version, which received a world premiere last year in Portland, unites all four movements of this gorgeous, romantic concerto. Come and hear all about the history and the journey of this concerto at the pre-concert talks this weekend!

Hope to see you all there!🎶🎻🎺
