Interpreting LaMonte’s beautiful hollow sculpture for @deyoungmuseum was such an honor~
The biggest challenge was finding a mechanic that echoed the piece’s delicate, restrained emptiness while feeling elegant and holding water reliably. After lots of brainstorming, I settled on a cage with clear trays and floral frogs as the base for this gentle mound of blooms that reclaims the figure’s interior space.
The goal was to optimistically extend the message and quietly protest the perception of women as form without substance. I chose just a few floral varieties to represent the complexity of a woman’s interior without taking away the understated beauty of the sculpture. It was a real joy to interpret a work that speaks to me deeply ❤️
