Had a great time at Starbase despite the rainy weather. Didn’t get a chance to observe this time, but Slander certainly put on a great show with excellent plur vibes and cool art. The portal was so epic. Rainbow as consolation for the bad weather on the last slide 💔🌈 Hopefully we’ll be back next year with clear skies ✨🌌 @starbasefestival @slanderofficial @insomniacevents

you still have a chance to view the comet! look west 45-60 minutes after local sunset on monday and tuesday and you should spot the bright nucleus and dim ascending tail between two bright objects: venus and arcturus. from wednesday on, you’ll need binoculars. i made this infographic for LA but the angle of the tail will differ based on your latitude. neat! comets are huge dirty snowballs that melt when close to the sun. we see the melted material blasted away by the solar wind behind the comet. comet fun fact: meteor showers only happen because of comets! if we are lucky, a comet’s path will cross the orbit of Earth. every year when we pass through the tail, we see many shooting stars from the little grains of dust that were released with the melted ice. this is why we have meteor showers! although the solid icy part isnt that big, comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) has an enormous gas cloud of melted material surrounding it, measuring 130,000 miles wide and 18 million miles long. the comet is currently 44 million miles away, and receding away from us at around 30 miles per second. #comet #space

@shabangslo was so fab! It was rainy and cloudy–not the greatest conditions for telescoping–but we made the best of it. We got to enjoy some excellent, small-scale festival production, and a mind-blowing rainbow. We usually get to view epic feats of nature looking through the scope, but this time we got a rainbow instead… I can’t say I’m that mad about it. :P Grateful for my enthusiastic crew @zacharyskovold and @danielahhouser who lifted my spirits when I realized we were clouded out for basically the whole weekend 🥲 Thanks to the art department lead Clara who brought us on and was so supportive! See you all next year up in beautiful SLO! and fingers crossed for clearer skies 😇 1. Daniela checking out double star Castor✨ with epic stage lasers illuminating the background ⚡️ 2. Sunset view from our installation 🌞 3. The main stage Shabang sign through the 20” at our minimum magnification–it just barely fit! 🔭 4.+ 🌈 pano
