This year FWAAMFest held its first free kickoff dance the night before the festival.
It was the culmination of our newest initiative, African American Dance Caller Pathways, doing our part to reconnect Black folks to the art of traditional dance calling and its Black cultural and historical roots.
At the dance, the pilot cohort of instructors and budding callers taught dances to people of all ages, backed by a live band led by fiddlers Shanice Richards and Isaiah Sibi.
Thank you to everyone who took part in the joy of that night!

Episode 8 of the FSRH was part of an epic late February weekend in Maine with Carol Bittenson, Cecile Leroy, and Daniel Raine.

Lots of common threads wove together in this interview, as the versatile combo reunited for their second gig as a trio (the first being just before the pandemic). The conversation was a sweet glimpse of the collaborative nature of these three fine musicians, and the commitment they have to playing music for dancers. Their histories overlapped and diverged, like a weaving with different colors and patterns highlighted and converging. Youâll also be treated to Ice Cream Sandwiches, Owls with Cowls, tunes for particular people, and some classics in the contra and English country dance vernacular. Enjoy!

Happy spring! For our May Song of the Month, Bob & Jen Strom introduce âThe Golden Vanity,â the tale of a sea captain who reneges on a promise to a valiant cabin boy.
This ballad, based on Child Ballad #286, has been collected widely: Scotland, England, Ireland, Canada, and the Appalachians. The story is an old one: the powerful captain takes advantage of the lowly cabin boy. Once the boy successfully sinks the enemy, he returns to the ship, only to find that the Captain has reneged on his promise. In some variants, he is rewarded; in others, he is shot, drowned, or taken aboard the ship too late and dies onboard.
