Day 131 of paddling across America and although the day I would say was somewhat uneventful compared to MANY … more accurately… Most days of this expedition, there is something about a moment on day 131 that has stuck with me. I found myself running concerningly low on drinking water. Yes I’m paddling on water, however, the Mississippi river is not exactly the water you want or I wanted to be drinking. I did not have a filtering system as, when in the canoe originally, we had plenty of space for storing water, as well, with a partner, it was easy to pull off and one go fill up, while the other sits with the gear. Now solo though.. I couldn’t simply leave all my gear sitting at a boat ramp or anywhere where people may get curious. So I kept paddling. That is until in the distance, over a field of soy beans, I could see a row of houses. A small area of mud at the rivers edge and the tall crop to hide my gear, made for a perfect spot to stash my things and hike up. As I finally approached what looked to be summer homes, some closed up and all but one with zero signs of life. The one though, a number of works puttering around. I came up and asked about filling up my water at the hose tap there. Only speaking Spanish, we were still easily able to figure out what I was in need of and they also flipped up a cooler and grabbed a coke and handed it to me! Returning to the kayak I sipped the sweet treat to which I don’t normally drink and as I did, I came to realize, there in the fresh, slick mud, bear tracks! • • #paddlingacrossamerica #rcgs_sgrc #theexplorersclub #mec #paddlingmagazine

These hot temperatures that just arrived, after an unusually cold spell in Squamish, sure do have my mind on our cottage, the lake, and the calming sounds of summer! A quiet paddle as the sun slowly sets or as it gently rises, while the world around is tranquil, content and painted in gorgeously vibrant warm hues, accompanying the subtle heat of summer at those times of day is just one of the truly countless moments that has me beyond excited for the ice to melt and the boats to be put in! • • • #lakeofthewoods #sharecangeo #paddlingmagazine #discoverontario #explorecanada

Super excited to have a few Raven 120 kids kayaks available on our site. One of the only kid-sized performance kayaks available, it's an amazing way to get kids on the water in a way where they can practice real sea kayaking skills and handling. And at only 26 pounds, it's a breeze to carry.

Deep within the hidden bay at the western tip of the island, stands a wall of grand blue rock. A discovery I made when I was a teenager with my first kayak, taking to the water to explore every inch of the island I, my dad and my gramma grew up on. First photographing these beautiful faces with my film camera, returning many times over the years, now to photograph and simply view their unique beauty. Speckled with rust and orange coloured lichen while water lines smear across the deep, harsh vertical folds and cracks of the rock. This place holds another memory from years back; when I managed to convince my best friend, not the most outdoorsy of guys, to kayak with me all the way here. To then pull our boats up to the cliff and climb out… discovering as we hiked and climbed to the top, a bear den right there beside us. It was midsummer so there was not one present, but oh how the evidence was abundant. I was excited, Kieran… well he wasn’t too happy about the bugs and what I was making him do anyways, but he made his typical hilarious jokes and humoured my adventure. I’ll never forget this place, the laughs, the beauty or his memory because of it! • • • #kayak #exploreontario #explorecanada #sharecangeo #paddlingmagazine
