Continuing the tradition of commemorating the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance, CCI participants volunteered at various organizations to create a positive impact in their communities. This year, participants volunteered with rescue missions, food pantries, nature centers, festivals, and helped with other community organizations and events. Many also had opportunities to share their culture and learn about the lasting impact of 9/11.

Rifqi had mixed feelings about returning home after teaching at an elementary school during his year abroad. He knew that he would miss his kindergarten students, but he also had a young daughter waiting for him to return. Throughout his teaching journey in the U.S., Rifqi was inspired not only to be a better teacher but also a more attentive father and educator to his daughter. As he carries his knowledge and experiences back to Indonesia, Rifqi is excited to share his lessons with his daughter and continue to help children to grow and develop.

For the second year in a row, Community College Initiative (CCI) Program participants completed Community Impact Projects (CIPs), which provide students with an opportunity to identify and solve an issue or need in their local community.
Through their initiatives, CCI participants make a positive change in their communities while learning valuable leadership and problem-solving skills. From ideation to implementation, the 2023-24 cohort created thoughtful and unique projects to address issues such as literacy, gender disparities in STEM, drug awareness, food and clothing insecurity, public safety, sustainable farming, recycling, transportation, and more. Using the skills they learned throughout this process, they return home with a better understanding of how to address the needs in their home communities.

Vishal, driven by dreams of enhancing his English skills and achieving financial independence for himself and his family, ventured to the U.S. to participate in the CCI Program. During the closing of the orientation, he answered a reflective question to his peers: "What will keep you motivated throughout this year?" In sharing his resolve, Vishal highlighted the privilege of their selection and his personal commitment to staying true to his aspirations. His initial address not only boosted his confidence in speaking English but also set the stage for his ongoing pursuit of his objectives. As he returns home, Vishal will carry these experiences with him, remembering to tackle his goals, one step at a time.
