Most health and rehabilitation centers suffer from drab furniture and lifeless interiors due to critical underfunding. This raises an important question: how does recovery coincide with the furnished environment? Through my own experience, I realized how crucial soothing and intentional spaces were to my healing.
The Closer Chair reimagines the plastic cafeteria-style chairs commonly found in support group circles such as Alcoholics Anonymous or bereavement groups. It introduces a modular system that can stand alone or connect to form a shared bench. Through a simple and intuitive sliding joint, it invites another form of emotional support: closeness, allowing space for tangible connection, such as holding hands or sharing a hug.
