Wildfires devastated many parts of Nova Scotia. But they also sparked new growth in blueberries, especially in areas where they’ve been dormant. Blueberry grower Peter Sutherland was one of the many Nova Scotians forced to leave his property as wildfires raged in Shelburne County at the end of May, and lost up to $400,000 in property value and around 20 per cent of his crop. Despite the significant losses, he said he knew the fire would spark new blueberry growth quickly. That’s because blueberry plants have a massive root and rhizome system, which makes them different from other plants. Rhizomes are underground stems that produce shoots and roots of new plants, which is the reason the plant is so resilient. "It serves as a storage reserve that the plant can draw on when it's exposed to really harsh environmental conditions such as forest fires," said David Percival, a professor in Dalhousie University's faculty of agriculture. As of last week, Sutherland’s green shoots had already regrown more than five centimetres tall. That’s likely because a similar event happened more than 100 years ago. "This is why this is all blueberries here to start with. This whole area burnt just over 100 years ago, the same area that this fire just went through,” said Sutherland. The RCMP say they have recovered a body believed to be that of a missing youth who was travelling in a vehicle when it was swept away and submerged during historic flooding in Nova Scotia. The RCMP said the body of a youth was found along the shore of Advocate Harbour on Tuesday morning. "We're working with the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service to positively identify the remains," Supt. Sean Auld told a news conference. "But at this time, we believe they're those of the youth who was unaccounted for following extreme flood conditions in West Hants." Four people, including a man, two children and a youth went missing on July 22 after their vehicles became submerged in floods in the Brooklyn area of West Hants Regional Municipality. If you can see this post, it hasn’t happened to you yet. But soon you won’t be able to see news content on Instagram or Facebook in Canada. Meta has been signalling this move was coming after the Canadian government passed its Online News Act, Bill C-18, in June. The social media giant says it has officially begun ending news availability on its platforms in Canada starting today. Bill C-18 requires big tech giants like Google and Meta to pay media outlets for news content they share or otherwise repurpose on their platforms. "In order to provide clarity to the millions of Canadians and businesses who use our platforms, we are announcing today that we have begun the process of ending news availability permanently in Canada," Rachel Curran, Meta's head of public policy in Canada, said in a statement. Implementing the changes on the company's platforms is expected to take a few weeks.
