While the total number of farmers across Canada has been on a decline, young Albertans, and particularly young women, are bucking that trend. These new farmers are forgoing life in the city for something they feel is more gratifying. (Reporting: William Wang/CBC; Photos/Video: Craig Ryan/CBC, Jamie McCannel/CBC and William Wang/CBC) #CBC #CBCNews #Alberta #farming #farmers #young #jobs #career #yeg #edmonton #tofield

With wildfire within 15 kilometres of Yellowknife, residents were ordered to evacuate by noon Friday. Beverly Pilgrim arrived in Edmonton, after a long drive from the capital. “We’re not really sure how we should be feeling,” she says, not knowing where she’ll spend the night, or if she’ll have a home to return to. The territorial government declared a state of emergency, and federal military evacuation flights began on Thursday. The N.W.T. government urged people to register for one of 22 flights out of the capital as the noon evacuation deadline approached. Many people spent the night waiting in line for flights. More flights have been added going into Saturday. Thousands have already fled via the highway, many headed for the Edmonton area. See our link in bio for more. (Reporting: Richard Raycraft/CBC, Pratyush Dayal/CBC; Photos/Video: Pat Kane/Reuters, Francis Tessier-burns/CBC, Courtney Holmes) #CBC #CBCNews #Alberta #NWT #wildfire #evacuation #yellowknife #edmonton #yeg

Cycling commuters have a new, secure option at the Century Park transit centre. And the best part? It’s free. For a $10 deposit, cyclists can sign up for a swipeable card that gives them access to the storage facility, which will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A couple of things to keep in mind: spots are first-come-first-served and you’ll still need a lock to secure your bike once inside. This new bike storage is a pilot project and will be used to evaluate if the bike lock up needs to be expanded and if other transit centres will get a storage facility. (Photos: Aaron Sousa/CBC) #CBC #CBCNews #yeg #cycle #safety #bike #e-bike #theft #transit #centurypark #ETS

“It’s been surreal,” said Métis artist Conrad Plews, who designed a new logo for Edmonton’s football team. Plews said it will appear on players’ helmets and at Commonwealth Stadium’s centre field. Can it help turn things around for the struggling team? See link in bio for more. (Video: William Wang/CBC; reporter: Mark Connolly/CBC) #edmontonelks #goelks #cfl #indigenous #tatooartist

A pilot project for free, monitored bike parking is aiming to draw more people to Edmonton’s downtown. Volunteers ensure bicycles are tagged and locked up in a cage, leaving owners free to walk around. Located at the corner of 103rd Street and 102nd Avenue, the project is funded by the city’s Meet Me Downtown campaign, which aims to get more people visiting the city core. Since the pandemic, Edmonton’s downtown has seen an increase in vandalism and property damage. Bike Edmonton executive director Greg Glatz says more people create a safe environment. He hopes that a safe place to store bikes will encourage people to come downtown on two wheels. The project ends in September. Check out the link in bio to learn more. (Video: Richard Marion/CBC and William Wang/CBC; reporting: Ayesha Haq/CBC) #yeg #bikeyeg #edmonton #bikeedmonton #cycling #yegdt

Four African penguins are new arrivals at the West Edmonton Mall’s Marine Life, and CBC radio host Jessica Ng meets one of them. The penguins are an endangered species, with about 26,000 in the wild. The four penguins are part of a breeding program, and three of them already are paired with a breeding partner. “It is kind of like a dating website,” laughs animal care supervisor Stacey Feltham. If all goes well, the penguins will breed and their offspring will eventually be released in Africa. (Photo and video: Tristan Mottershead/CBC; Reporting: Jessica Ng) #CBC #radioactive #yeg #wem #wested #westedmontonmall #penguins #endangered

Edmonton residents who gardened empty dirt patches by the boulevard once had to do so on the sly. As of last summer, the City of Edmonton streamlined the process to garden boulevards. It’s easier than ever for people to beautify their neighbourhood streets. But there is a small catch: permits are required and rules should be followed, and not all gardeners are on board. Check out our link in bio for more. #yeg #yeglocal #gardening #boulevardening

Between fire and floods, we’ve seen a lot of changes across the Canadian landscape this summer - and all of those events leave a mark. And some leave wildflowers. Fireweed, to be exact. Here’s why you’re likely seeing more fireweed around this summer, and how you can use it. (Video: Craig Ryan/CBC; Reporting: Emily Williams/CBC) #CBC #CBCNews #Alberta #yeg #Fire #fireweed #nature #forest #natural #garden #canada

"Everybody talks about… there's an abundance of work, there's this, there's that. But I've never felt more alone and marginalized than since starting my practice here," says Lungile Tinarwo, a lawyer who had high hopes of establishing her own law firm and prospering in Edmonton. Ten years after leaving Toronto, and as the province continues to target skilled workers in Ontario and the Maritimes with its Alberta is Calling campaigns, she's having regrets. Work in Edmonton for racialized women is a double-edged sword, experts say. The city is attractive for its affordability and opportunities, but social exclusion, unfair pay, dismissals and inequitable treatment are driving some out.. Visit our link in bio for more. (Photos: Submitted by Lungile Tinarwo; Reporting: Thandiwe Konguavi) #CBC #CBCNews #Alberta #Edmonton #yeg #BeingBlackinEdmonton
