Here in Carleton County, it’s an old tradition rooted in farm life and close-knit communities. A celebration of spring’s arrival, May baskets were made by hand, filled with flowers or small treats, and left on a neighbour’s front door. The giver would knock or ring the bell and run—part of the playful “drop-and-dash” that made it so memorable.
In some communities, it even had a light romantic touch, with baskets left for someone special. But at its heart, the tradition was about reconnecting after winter—visiting (or surprising) neighbours, strengthening social ties, and welcoming the growing season together. 🌿🌼
