A HUGE congratulations to BCIRPU Director Dr. Shelina Babul, who received the 2026 @ywcabc Women of Distinction Award – Health & Wellness!
Dr. Babul was recognized for her work in injury prevention and health promotion, particularly on the issue of #concussion through the @catt.concussions tool.
"Health and wellness means more than just the absence of injury or illness. It’s about equity, advocating for prevention, and ensuring that every person has the opportunity to live a safe and healthy life," Dr. Babul said at the May 7 awards gala.
"This award reinforces the importance of the work we do and the responsibility we carry for the well-being of others. Thank you to my family, friends, and colleagues for your constant support, and to the YWCA for shining a light on the important work ALL the nominees tonight are doing."

A concussion isn’t always obvious, but knowing the signs can make a real difference. 🔍
Symptoms can show up in different ways, and they are not always immediate. Taking the time to recognize what to look for can help you respond quickly and support someone who may be at risk.
Understanding these signs helps protect players, prevent further injury, and create a safer environment for everyone on the field.
Know the signs. Be ready to act.

We’re saddened to hear about the passing of Dr. Brian Hunt, a neurosurgeon and tireless advocate for concussion awareness in British Columbia. For years, Brian was vocal about the detrimental impact of repeated blows to the head and its impact on the brain.
“It was an honour to know and work with Brian,” said BCIRPU Director Dr. Shelina Babul. “He made a lasting impact through his tireless efforts to raise the alarm bells on concussions, and through his generosity of time and knowledge, and unwavering commitment to his work and to the people around him. Many of us benefited deeply from his guidance, thoughtfulness, and integrity. His absence will be felt profoundly within our community.”

Outdoor ice skating is a great winter activity for kids! ⛸️
When taking a look at skating injuries, only one-third of children and youth were wearing safety equipment at the time of injury.
Don’t forget to pop on a helmet before hitting the ice! 🪖
