What is the Brooklyn Cat Cafe? And how do we help cats? For those of you who don’t know us — hello! Thanks for joining along in our adventures in animal rescue. The Brooklyn Cat Cafe is a volunteer-run adoption center and community space working to reduce animal homelessness through education, TNR and outreach. We are the only non-profit cat cafe in New York City. Since opening in 2016, we have rescued over 5,000 cats and more than 100 other animals including dogs, guinea pigs, rats, rabbits, mice and a chicken. Well over 3,000 animals have been placed in permanent adoptive homes and over 800 cats have been TNRed. In 2021 we started the BBAWC rescue clinic which so far has done over 4,500 exams and over 1,200 spay/neuter surgeries. Now it’s your turn — how did you find us? We have not one, not two, not even three, but SIX eyeless cats at the Brooklyn Cat Cafe right now! Technically, one of them has one eye but she’s an honorary member of the eyeless crew! If you’ve never met an eyeless kitty before, you’re in for a treat. Each and everyone one of these cats is incredibly affectionate and snuggly. What they lack in eyesight they make up for with LOVE! If you want lap and shoulder cats, these guys are the cats for you. They get around amazingly well, playing and romping around just like any other cat. An unconventional rush hour rescue in Manhattan.❤️People often ask what they can do to help the homeless cat crisis. Sometimes it’s as simple as what Tracy and her dog did yesterday evening — they dropped everything and found someone who would be able to help. Sweet Checkpoint’s well-kept fur and his sudden appearance in an area without outdoor cats indicate that he is a pet who was abandoned outside. He was frozen in fear which probably saved his life. Life outdoors is hard for any cat, and indoor cats are particularly unequipped to cope with NYC’s dangers. Every day we help starving, sick, and injured cats who have been hit by cars, who have accidentally eaten rat poison, or worse. Checkpoint was incredibly lucky that someone cared enough to find him help, that we happened to be walking by, and that Tracy was willing to wait until we came back with a carrier. Today he received a full set of medical services along with his neuter surgery thanks to @bbawcrescueclinic . After a brief quarantine he will be available for adoption and ready for the next chapter of his story. As a small rescue organization we cannot do any of this work without the support and involvement of our community. After 7 years on the street and one year as a cafe/foster cat… Bryonia (now named Olive! 🫒) finally has a safe warm home, a cozy blanket, and lots of love from her forever family 💗 I had the great luck a couple weeks ago to run into the woman who fed and took care of Olive when she was an outdoor cat, and hearing more about her life before rescue really emphasizes just how far she’s come. In her first months inside as a cafe cat, she wasn’t sure about people and mostly came out at night, but everyone at @catcafebk could see how much she WANTED love and affection. When she moved home with me as a foster cat, she would let me pet her but quickly jump back into her “fight or flight” mode and swat and hiss. With time and patience, she slowly realized that she was safe and no one would ever hurt her again, and she started to relax and enjoy love and affection. But I knew that there was another level of comfort and happiness she was missing, that would only come from finding her true home. And now, thanks to her new family Abbie and Brad (and kitty cat brother Avocado 🥑), she can finally relax knowing that she’s home for good. I’m so happy for her and for her new family — they couldn’t be more perfect for her and I know she’ll continue to flourish and open up with their love and care. And, I’m so grateful for @catcafebk for bringing her in, keeping her safe, giving her love when she didn’t know how to accept it yet, and trusting me (and @unfussyfood !!) to usher her through the last six months. Welcome to the good life, Olive 💗🫒 You earned it!
