Are traditional gutters more trouble than they’re worth? @catalystbuilt argues that ground gutters—when done right—are a smarter, lower-maintenance solution for managing roof runoff. Filmed on location at the Prairie Sun and Timber Series, Travis walks us through a full ground gutter installation: from drip line layout and trenching to the use of perforated pipe, crushed stone, and landscape fabric. He explains why ground gutters outperform conventional systems when it comes to debris management, durability, and homeowner safety—especially by eliminating the need for rooftop maintenance. 👉 LINK IN BIO - TRAVIS BRUNGARDT Have you used ground gutters on your projects? Build for the Long Haul 🏠💪 @catalystbuilt makes a powerful case for prioritizing performance and quality over chasing short-term ROI. By choosing premium products—like a top-tier pump or Rockwool insulation—you’re not just building for today… you’re building for durability, comfort, and resilience in the face of the unexpected. Scope creep—it happens on almost every project. The timeline stretches, the budget swells… and somehow, the contractor always takes the fall. In this episode, we dig into how these changes actually happen, why no one seems to remember agreeing to them, and who’s really responsible when a project runs long or over budget. Spoiler: it’s not always the builder. @buildingconsensus @catalystbuilt LINK IN BIO - BUILDING CONSENSUS

Throwback to window install day. Not only did I get the first 100 Series triple-pane units off the line, but I also had the engineers onsite. Check out how the install went on the Build Show /contents/triple-pane-window-install-tips #tripleglazed #andersenwindows #100series #build #buildshow

While many of us in renovation have received a little holiday treat or something extra it's definitely not the norm, day in and day out. Should we, as service providers be part of the gratuity demanding operations so many other industries employ. @catalystbuilt @bbuildsit LINK IN BIO - BUILDING CONSENSUS

@catalystbuilt explains why he chose to install a whole-home standby generator before tackling other renovation projects, driven by unreliable overhead power lines and mature trees in his neighborhood. He walks through how the system works, including the automatic transfer switch, load management, cold-weather reliability, and what’s involved in a professional installation. For @catalystbuilt , reproducing historic details while meeting modern performance standards is part of renovating older homes. Today’s @andersen_windows_pros options, like simulated divided-lites and high-performance glass coatings, make it possible to match the original look while improving performance. Notice the steel reinforcement around @stevenbaczekarchitect and the cant strips in the corner of the wall after @catalystbuilt plays Vanna White. Did a little light research and this is a G.F.R.P. System (glass fiber reinforced polymer) a wet set fiberglass mat laid in an epoxy-like bedding compound. This is the repair after the 2020 5.7 earthquake. @jordansmithbuilds This was a stop on my floor remediation tour. Eras ain’t got nothing on me!

Tonight’s the night! 🍻🏠 We’re talking deep retrofits, wellness, carbon, and cost with Kyle Macht, CPHC, and Principal at Macht Architecture. Kyle brings a practical building science perspective shaped by architectural engineering, energy audits, and custom residential design — aka exactly the kind of brain we like to put in the BS + Beer hot seat. 🔥 We’ll get into the big retrofit questions: 💰 What about upfront cost? 🛠️ What about future maintenance? 🌎 What about embodied + operational carbon? 🌬️ What about indoor environmental quality? 🏡 What about comfort, durability, and long-term performance? And maybe the biggest question: what happens when we move beyond simple payback and look at the full impact on people, buildings, and the planet? 📅 Tonight — Thursday, May 7, 2026 ⏰ 6pm ET • 5pm CT • 4pm MT • 3pm PT Bring your questions, your beverage, and your best “it depends” energy. 🍺🤓 👉 Register at the link in bio and join us tonight! #BSandBeer #BuildingScience #DeepRetrofit #RetrofitForWellness #PassiveHouse #HighPerformanceHomes #IndoorEnvironmentalQuality #EmbodiedCarbon #OperationalCarbon #SustainableDesign #ResidentialConstruction

Travis Brungardt breaks down a tricky deck detail—using upside-down joist hangers in a cantilevered setup. With load paths flipped, connections have to resist different forces, making proper hardware and fasteners critical. Bottom line: follow the engineered plan—these details matter for long-term performance.

Sound shapes how we experience our homes more than we realize. Everyday noise influences how we rest, focus, and recharge. Thoughtful acoustic design helps create calmer, more comfortable living spaces by reducing sound transfer throughout the home. On June 4 at 4 p.m. ET/ 1 p.m. PT, join co-hosts Randy Williams, Travis Brungardt, and Joe Cook for a roundtable conversation on the emotional connection to acoustics and why sound matters in daily life at home. Guest builder Steven Kasay of Kasay Construction will share real-world perspective from his projects in the South. Listen in and be part of the conversation. Register at the link in bio.

This week on BS + Beer, we’re talking deep retrofits, wellness, carbon, and cost with Kyle Macht, CPHC and Principal at Macht Architecture. 🍻🏠 Kyle brings a thoughtful, practical perspective shaped by architectural engineering, energy audits, building science, and custom residential design. We’ll look at retrofit decisions through a wider lens: 💰 upfront costs 🛠️ future maintenance 🌎 embodied + operational carbon 🌬️ indoor environmental quality 🏡 comfort, durability + performance 👥 long-term impacts on people and buildings Can deeper retrofits be more sustainable, healthier, and more cost-effective when we move beyond simple payback? Let’s get into it. 📅 Thursday, May 7, 2026 ⏰ 6pm ET • 5pm CT • 4pm MT • 3pm PT Bring your questions, your beverage, and your best “it depends” energy. 🍺 Register to watch live, link in bio. #BSandBeer #BuildingScience #DeepRetrofit #RetrofitForWellness #PassiveHouse #HighPerformanceHomes
