It’s Bandcamp Friday, STRIP MALL is hitting the festival circuit, and I’m so thrilled to finally share the OST. — In case you’re not subscribed to my Bandcamp feed (I don’t blame you on a day like today)…
I’ve been loving the gritty surrealist films of the past decade+ (Sean Baker, Safdie Brothers, etc.), so imagine my delight when I was asked to write a score for a short film firmly in this genre, of mostly diegetic music, set in a strip mall. Writer/director
@andrewappelle , writer/producer/editor Robert Hyland, the entire cast and crew (w special shout-out to scenic painter
@kvmcqtattoos ) are some of the nicest, coolest, most talented folks I’ve worked with, and I’ve never felt the bar set this high. I failed a lot on the way, but I’m so pleased with how the score turned out.
“Cumberland Terrace” is one of those failures: though it isn’t in film, I liked it enough to include in the release. It’s the sadder sister (and first iteration of) “Working Together” and I’m dedicating it to one of my favourite places in Toronto, and to the kind custodian, David, who gave me a very nice office chair.
I find mallsoft incredibly challenging to write, so I’m super proud of these tunes. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but if it’s yours, I hope you find it as delicious as I do. Genuinely one of the best projects I’ve worked on, and some of my favourite tracks I’ve written so far.
Link in stories & bio as always.
