The south-facing orientation of this modern farmhouse in the Methow Valley optimizes winter solar exposure coupled with large overhangs to protect from snowfall and the intense summer sun.
The Berm House is post and beam structure with a cross-laminated timber (CLT) roof prefabricated in northeastern Washington. Daylight and views are maximized along the entire south-facing wall.
The exterior employs the Japanese shou sugi ban preservation technique. The boulders throughout the site and as part of the berm were pulled from the site and placed by the owner.
The design incorporates Passive House principles, including managing seasonal heat gain from solar exposure, advanced air sealing, and mechanical ventilation. The earthen roof adds thermal mass, wildfire protection, and a promontory to take in the down valley vista.

CAST’s landscape and architectural designer Will Prescott was on site for the installation of more than 700 plants as part of a revitalized residential landscape in Woodinville.
Corten steel planters, formal gardens, terraces, and wood decks hover above a more naturalistic meadow landscape, extending the gradient between indoors and outdoors.
The landscape and hardscape elements were designed as a unified composition, with hand-placed attention to detail throughout the garden to blur the line between architecture and landscape.

With thoughtful siting, ample views, and an intimate courtyard, this custom home provides year-round connections to the outdoors.
The twelve-foot-high bank of windows and NanaWall in the great room face southwest and provide transparency through the home. The interior wood ceiling extends out through the overhang above the veranda, further drawing the eye out and bringing in the outdoors. The intentional roof height protects from the summer heat and allows the winter sun in to warm the space.
A centerline from the kitchen to the fireplace wall is a nod to formality. The open kitchen, clad in local Douglas fir, was designed for those social interactions that happen best around food. The home’s horseshoe shape creates a gathering space between the wings of the home.

Another useful tip we talked about in the first episode of our podcast is going with a pre-approved DADu design. This can enable you to get permits in 2-6 weeks for a project.

The Rainer Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands, nurtured by the community, is a place where they can come together to grow food in the city. The seven-acre site can produce 20,000 pounds of affordable, fresh produce a year for community members struggling with food insecurity.
This award-winning urban farm transformed a seven-acre tree nursery into an agriculture center for a culturally diverse area of Seattle. It inspires and educates people to safeguard our natural resources while developing an equitable and sustainable food system.
Local food production for a neighborhood abundant with immigrant culture means refugees, who were forced to flee their homeland farms, now pass down food, farming traditions, and identity to the next generation through RBUFW.
At the heart of the farm is the new 1,800 SF Classroom Building. The building program was a result of a community-driven process that led to the design of a flexible gathering space and a commercial kitchen for meals and cooking demonstrations.
The cantilever classroom canopy creates a protected porch for gathering regardless of the weather. Situating the classroom on a slope between two groves of trees at the edge of the site maximizes the arable land in front of the building and minimizes the building profile for the neighbors.

Adapting to the layout of your current lot is crucial when planning a multi generational or investment development. Depending on layouts you may want to create a more intimate shared courtyard experience or divided depending on the goals of your build. DM Dadu to learn more about your lot!
This renovation of a century-old Queen Anne craftsman beautifully balances modern sensibilities with classic style.
The home needed to keep up with evolving family needs. An addition and reorganization of space included a modern kitchen, family room, and entrance from the backyard. The new space, designed with a bank of custom Kolbe windows and doors that mimic the original windows throughout the rest of the home, creates a sunroom that feels like it has always been there. Painstakingly reproduced corbels and ledges around doors and windows match the original details of the historic home.

The game has changed, that’s why @waltierhomes we are starting a podcast covering all things Seattle RE and development. We’re moving past the era of just cottages and ADUs. We’re talking about density that scales.
In our first episode, we sit down with our first guest, Matt Hutchins - Principal and founder @cast.arch who served as AIA Seattle President 24-25, and is a passive house certified designer just to name a few of his credentials. Matt is extremely involved in Seattle zoning and urban planning. In the podcast we break down some of the massive potential in neighborhood residential zoning:
SFR-> Mixed-use Market + flats above
High-density stacked apartments
Duplexes in backyards of SFR
The blueprint for the new Seattle is here.

This work with the Port Gamble S’Kallam Tribe brings together a new hatchery building and beach shelter. These two structures combine symbolic content and pragmatic use, central to the Tribe’s traditional identity and its contemporary outlook. This new building houses office and utility space for the @portgamblesklallams salmon hatchery program, along with a separate open-air structure used by the Tribe’s commercial fishing operations. Other pieces focused on access to the site, interpretive elements, and landscape restoration.
Salmon fishing is central to the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe’s traditional identity and its contemporary outlook. This project recognizes the cultural importance of both the place—a focal point of their history—and the program, while providing solutions to allow these activities to flourish in the 21st century.

RIGHTSIZE YOUR RENOVATION
Seattle has amazing neighborhoods. Instead of moving, many families choose to renovate and stay in a neighborhood they love.
There are many options… adding a new primary suite, renovating a kitchen, adding a sunroom, or a full transformational renovation. CAST balances function, modern design, and traditional craft to help a home keep up with evolving family needs.
Renovation also offers an environmental benefit by avoiding the significant carbon emissions from the manufacture and shipping of new building materials.
1-2 Mann Residence
We added a primary suite with privacy and tons of natural light.
3-5 Wallingford Bungalow
A custom kitchen with a pizza oven, beer taps, and connection to the outside.
6-7 Queen Anne Craftsman Renovation
We renovated the kitchen and added a sunroom.
8-9 Lakeshore Residence
A transformational renovation, adding a third story.
10-11 Hawthorn Hills Three
We developed the property to add and ADU + DADU.

“It’s a house that blurs the line between indoors and out, through the seasons.” — Tim Hammer, architect
A goal for Bear Creek Basecamp was to create a single ceiling plane from the interior to the exterior to connect all the spaces. The low profile of the home preserves views for everyone enjoying the lake and its surrounding hills.
