COVERING L.A. CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT 6 SPECIAL ELECTION DEBATE IN SAN FERNANDO VALLEY Candidates Marco Santana, Imelda Padilla, Marisa Alcaraz, Isaac Kim, Antoinette Scully and Douglas Sierra are running to replace former Councilwoman Nury Martinez in LA's Dustrict 6. They are expected to participate in event organized by Hope the Mission, formerly Hope of the Valley, in which they will discuss their positions and solutions for the issues most impacting Angelenos, and housing and homelessness will inevitably be a central topic for the candidates. I'm covering the event fir the San Fernando Valley Sun/El Sol newspaper. The special election is to fill former Los Angeles City Councilmember Nury Martinez’s seat. There seven candidates qualified to be on the ballot, and there will be three confirmed candidates attending this debate. Special election ballots will be sent out in March and Election Day is April 4th. If a single candidate does not obtain a majority of votes, there will be a runoff between the two candidates receiving the majority of the votes on June 27.

Award recipients include: Teresa Romero, President of United Farm Workers (UFW); DeVon Franklin, (“Flamin’ Hot”) award-winning producer, New York Times; Shura Wallin, border activist and co-founder of humanitarian group Green Valley-Sahuarita Samaritan; and actor/filmmaker Enrique Castillo, (“Weeds”, “Blood In Blood ")--and former child farmworker from Calexico.

A POWERFUL PRESENTATION ABOUT A MAYAN TRAGEDY Actor Manuel Chatay, kneeling, center, gave a tour-de-force performance as a 10-year-old Mayan survivor of a genocidal massacre carried by the Guatemalan Army in the staging of SENTADO EN UN ARBOL CAIDO (Sitting on a Fallen Tree). A production of the L.A.-based Grupo de Teatro Akabal, the play is part of the series "Disrupting the Mainstream" at the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles. The series celebrates 35 years of the Grupo de Teatro Sinergia and 3 decades of the Frida Kahlo Theater. The play was preceded by a Mayan invocation and followed by a panel of Guatemalan activists and genocide and torture survivors. The series continues through Sept. 16 with more play works, a poster exhibit, a student photo exhibit and panel discussions. More info: @Frida Kahlo Theater.

@ STAGING OF 'SITTING ON A FALLEN TREE' ABOUT MAYAN GENOCIDE IN GUATEMALA The staging of one scene of the play is part of the ongoing series "Disrupting the Mainstream" at the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles. (Read my article on the series in the San Fernando Sun newspaper: shorturl.at/EPTZ3 .) “Sentado en un Árbol Caído” (“Sitting on a Fallen Tree”) deals with the ongoing genocide perpetrated by the Guatemalan government against the indigenous Maya Quiché community since the 1970s, according to Amavizca. Written by LA-based Emanuel Loarca, the play tells this tragic tale using actual transcripts of the trial concerning the Black River Massacres from the early 1980s. It centers on the powerful testimony of a survivor who was a 10-year-old boy at the time of the mass murders. The performance will be followed by a question-and-answer session with actor Manuel Chitay and director Loarca. “Sentado en un Árbol Caído” will be presented in both Spanish and Maya Quiché.
