On this day in 2009, we published The Finest Hours, the true game changer of my writing career. Now considered a "modern maritime classic", the book has been translated into 17 languages, adapted into a Disney movie starring Chris Pine & Casey Affleck, screened in 85 countries and seen & read by millions around the world. I gotta thank my big bro Sherman Todd once again for giving me the idea and inspiration to pursue this story, and of course the heroes, Bernie, Andy, Ervin & Richard for going out into that killer storm in a 36 foot boat to save lives....

Are you a fellow FLW nut? I’m delighted to be moderating a Brooklyn Barnes & Noble event on May 18 with Casey Sherman, whose new book The Killer and Frank Lloyd Wright dives into one of the most sensational and tragic chapters in Wright’s orbit. Good timing on my end. I ubered to Taliesin in Wisconsin from Appleton this summer (really) while I was at the Osh Kosh fly in, so I come to this conversation properly haunted and very ready. Casey is a New York Times bestselling author whose books The Finest Hours and Patriots Day were adapted into major motion pictures, and whose Helltown became a true crime favorite. This new book is already generating attention, and there are reports that it is being developed as a feature film, with Leonardo DiCaprio said to be attached. 😯 The story itself has everything America has always known how to amplify: genius, desire, reinvention, private catastrophe, and violence. Frank Lloyd Wright was not only the architect of some of the country’s most iconic buildings. He was also one of the first American figures to live out a recognizably modern kind of fame, where artistic brilliance and personal scandal became inseparable in the public imagination. His affair with Mamah Borthwick and the life they built at Taliesin turned him into national headline material long before celebrity culture took its current form. I’m especially looking forward to talking with Casey about that intersection of architecture, spectacle, and crime, and about why certain American stories never loosen their grip. An update now to a story I wrote about in Boston Magazine about the wrongful conviction of Jimmy Rodwell, who has spent decades in a Mass prison for a murder he didn't commit. Based on my article and the incredible work done by Jimmy's lawyers and his family members, Gov. Healey granted Jimmy a clemency hearing back in April of last year. The hearing was supposed to be scheduled within six months... Tick... tick... tick. It's now been almost a year and still nothing. Jimmy's got a serious heart condition and it appears that the Parole Board is waiting Jimmy out. They'd rather watch him die behind bars than admit the state got it wrong. It's one of the most egregious cases in the history of the commonwealth. I'm angry. You should be too. Read the latest in today's Boston Herald. The full article is right here. After 45 years in prison and seven failed attempts to appeal his 1981 first-degree murder conviction, James Rodwell thought that the clemency hearing he’d been granted last April might mean a chance to be free. According to Gov. Maura Healey’s clemency guidelines, hearings should be held and recommendations should be issued within six months of filing a petition under most circumstances. But ten months after learning he would get a chance to plead his case, and more than a year after filing the original petition, Rodwell, now a 70-year-old man with a heart condition, has not received a hearing date. Rodwell is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the 1979 murder of Louis Rose Jr., the 21-year-old son of a Burlington Police captain, in Somerville. Even after the conviction, Rodwell has maintained his innocence, citing a lack of physical evidence in the case and credibility of the prosecution’s two star witnesses. Frankie Holmes received immunity for his testimony, while David Nagle — who said Rodwell confessed to him in prison — was a paid federal informant, according to evidence revealed by his current lawyer, something omitted at trial. The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office has said that it is not taking a position on Rodwell’s clemency petition, although it noted in a letter to the Advisory Board of Pardons that Rose’s b

The first major review is in for The Killer and Frank Lloyd Wright. Publisher's Weekly calls it, "(a) fascinating work of true crime... Sherman exhibits both a novelist's sense of pace and a reporter's eye for detail in this arresting true crime narrative of great passion and great tragedy. A heartbreaker!"
