“New York-based gallery Dernier Cri makes its debut with Night Shift, a moody, tightly curated group show that takes a single idea, the color black, and stretches it into something surprisingly expansive. Opening on the Upper East Side, the exhibition gathers newly commissioned works rendered entirely in black, where darkness becomes both the artists’ material and message. Founder Michael McGraw, long known for shaping the narratives around top design talents, brings an editorial eye to curation, favoring pieces that reveal how form, texture, and light behave within a restrained palette. Dernier Cri is pleased to introduce new work by Casey Johnson Studio. The Black Mountain, NC-based artist will present four new works for our inaugural exhibition, Night Shift, opening on January 29th.
Casey shares, “This current work explores the intersection of primal energy and the underlying structural order found in the natural and built world. Hand-carved wood beams shaped into biomorphic forms with receptor-like branches emphasize the raw, untamed life force and inherent natural geometry. The branch-like elements act as a sort of nervous system or sensory network, ‘receiving’ and contrasting with the surrounding space and light. This is the visceral manifestation of an inner wilderness. These forms are juxtaposed with clean, industrial tubular steel bases, a contrast that highlights the tension and harmony between the organic and the man-made, the wild and the structured, instinct and the ego. I am excited to announce that I will have new work on view at Dernier Cri, a new gallery in New York City, beginning January 29th. For this exhibition, which is titled Night Shift, gallerist Michael McGraw has commissioned a select group of artists and designers to create new work united by a single premise: each piece is rendered entirely in black. A study in how absence reveals presence, these pieces explore the artistry of restraint, illuminating how form, texture, and light shift within the limits of a single hue.

This 9ft tall entry door is the first ever front door we have ever made. Special thanks to my fabrication manager Ethan Donley who made sure every detail was considered throughout this entire build.
