Morning desert light, long shadows, and freshly trimmed Palo Verdes and agaves — over a dozen, with only a few scrapes to show for it. The creosote is blooming after last week’s rain, and the whole landscape feels serene and restorative. Heaven.

Outtakes from Scott Pask’s Tucson home, a refuge from his New York life that he calls “spiritual” and “healing,” for “Desert by Design.” We took these fresh from New Zealand (a journey that included planes, cars, ferries and a long layover in Hawaii). “Fresh” is a generous term. But Pask, the Arizona-born, Tony-winning set designer, mixed margaritas, and we were at it again. Days 34 and 35 of a 222-day production.
