The book „Vulkane“ (volcanoes, expeditions to the most dangerous craters in the world) published by National Geographic Germany was awarded with this „Mountain Image Book Award“ @ the #Banff #Mountainfilmfestival in #Canada. Thank you so much @banffcentre . I am really proud that even a German book made it up there. Here is David Roberts‘ laudatio: In this stunning volume, Carsten Peter performs the rare feat of showing us the natural world as we’ve never seen it before. The courage and skill it took for the photographer to get so close to potentially fatal explosions of lava, magma, and scalding geysers are evident, yet there’s very little ego involved in Peter’s presentation. The human figures posed in silhouette or in safety suits against dwarfing cataclysms have the anonymity of scientists and explorers bent on discovery, not glory. In the end, Vulkane delivers a revelation, as it shows us that the bucolic surface of the planet we inhabit disguises the unfathomable violence that seethes just beneath. Volcanos announce a subterranean world that we will never be able to explore, yet Carsten Peter has edged as close to its beautiful nightmare as we are ever likely to get. Interested in crazy adventures, fascinating nature and pure overwhelming power? The book is originally published in German and just recently in French and doing well. But sorry, there is no English version yet! If you are interested, please let me know. If you are a publisher, even better! @carstenpeter #banffmtnfest #neverstopexploring @thephotosociety @natgeo

July issue of National Geographic about China's Supercaves: here you see the second largest cave chamber in the world - Miao chamber - half a mile long with tiny persons in the frame and two more in boats (Tim & Jane Allen, Mike Warner) in the background, probably hardly to see in the tiny screen. The scale is enourmos. A british-chinese caving team around Andy Eavis made incredible #3D-laser #scans and you can have a fly through in that chamber, realistic like never seen before (check the nat geo iPad app or website). For the scanning we needed three days in 16 locations (Andi, Daniela Pani and Richard Walters), but even more time to postprocess. Stefan Fichtel and Joan Velasco did the miracle: 11 computers had to calculate more than four days. photo by @CarstenPeter @Extreme_Planet @natgeo @natgeocreative , @thephotosociety #extreme_planet #cave, #caving #speleo #spelunking #expedition #neverstopexploring

This is a side shot taken on the recent #Lions #Festival of #Creativity in #Cannes, #France. Linsey Addario @linseyaddario , Aaron Huey @argonautphoto and Carsten Peter @carstenpeter were invited to discuss about #CHANGE: THE POWER OF #PHOTOGRAPHY. National Geographic Creative @natgeocreative announced the panel: Photography has the power to undo your assumptions and alter your #perspective, to inspire, shock, and yes, change the world. National Geographic will explore the nature of creativity and power of visual #storytelling to transform hearts and minds. Our leading photojournalists from around the world will take you behind discuss their work, their creative process, and the nature of storytelling under risky conditions. @natgeo @thephotosociety . I wonder if the girl is watching youtube.

Anytime the drama in the #Riesending #cave should end, (the deepest and longest cave in #Germany): 12 days ago a caver was severely injured by rockfall and had to be rescued in one of the biggest international cave #rescue missions from a depth of around 1000m. Some years ago he helped me to cover this technically challenging cave. He is one of the pioneers in exploring of this vast system and initially I was very worried if not sceptical if a rescue in these dimensions is possible at all. The rescue team from Germany, Switzerland, Kroatia, Italy and Austria led a bravourus fight with narrow #canyons, deep pits, waterfalls, and difficult traverses. I cross my fingers that he soon can leave the darkness and finally can be treated in a hospital. @thephotosociety , @natgeo @natgeocreative #caveaccident,

Cover story of the German National Geographic "Wild Christmas" by @CarstenPeter : In the #Alps Santa Claus has grim counterparts and is accompanied by #devil like "Krampusses". They can be frightening and aggressive. Especially in the nights between the moon year and sun year the so called "#Rauhnaechte" you have to be aware of these #demons. Separated through mountain ridges a huge variety of local #customs survived until today. For more check out the German Geographic or the book "Alpendaemonen" (demons of the Alps by Carsten Peter by National Geographic). Actually it is my 3rd cover in a row: In October my smallest, in November my saddest and now maybe my most frightening. @thephotosociety @natgeo @natgeocreative #Krampus #Nikolaus #SantaClaus #Christmas #Mask #Rauhnacht #demon #custom #Alpen #Brauch #Brauchtum #tradition

It is likely a photographers dream to get the National Geographic cover. November 2013 is @carstenpeter Carsten Peter‘s 4th cover, including the national editions my 15th. But I wished this cover never would have „happened“. Too bitter, if a #tornado becomes personal and takes out the life of friends. #Storm #chasing welded this friendship for more than a decade, squeezed us into tight cars and was responsible for uncountable miles equaling many surroundings of the globe. I lived with Tim Samaras, his son Paul and Carl Young through numerous tight situations and never lost trust for my life in their hands. Their decisions put safety first and were very thoughtful. Tim and Carl were like toreros of the storms, who knew their beasts very well, „played“ with them for science sake in a virtuous and highly professional manner. Any uncertainty made them retract or skip their approach. It is almost an irony that they were hit who put safety first. It shows too how vulnerable man is versus these giant forces of nature and there is nothing to set against this metereological chaos, once it embraces you. I would have loved to celebrate our ten year anniversary of the #Manchester tornado with them (the 11/2013 cover image is from June 24th, 2003 - Paul was still too young to chase with us). It is also a photographic time travel: shot on film, it was a challenge to react fast enough to the ever changing light situations: I had 7 camera sets loaded with different sensitivities and optics - prepared for any constellation and trained three seasons for this. It was an almost too close experience and for sure a lifetime event. Tim never wanted to come that close again but was able to measure a world record pressure drop. @thephotosociety @natgeo

Etna‘s eruption in 2001 was probably the most amazing in the last century. You see the piano del lago cone, built in only three days just above the lights of Catania. It became the cover shot for National Geographic in February 2002. Today it is also the last day (and only few hours are left) for the 125 Years of National Geographic Photography auction @ Chriesie‘s (@Christiesinc ) http://ow.ly/nplZ7 Bids for this 125 year special edition limited number print of @CarstenPeter http://ow.ly/npo55 will be soon finished. @natgeo @thephotosociety #volcano, #etna, #Ätna, #eruption, #nationalgeographic, #auction, #print

iphone photo @CarstenPeter „#ROBOT PR2“: What a week of #exploration @ the #explorers symposium @natgeo headquarter. The annual Explorers Symposium has become a forum for visionary individuals across a range of fields to meet and find ways to collaborate on innovative projects. Chad Jenkins, #roboticist and #computer #scientist predicts widespread use of robots will transform #society in the near future, similar to how personal computing over the last 30 years has revolutionized our everyday lives. Robots already carry meals, medicines, blood samples, and laundry through hospitals and transform operating rooms with robotic surgery. At home, they now vacuum floors and will one day be assembling your do-it-yourself furniture. /explorers /pages/pr2/overview @thephotosociety #TPS The ROS open source robotic software framework and PR2 were developed together from the ground up. With PR2 and 1000+ libraries in the ROS ecosystem you can build on the power of the open source community. ROS.org

photo by @CarstenPeter : REST IN PEACE, CARL YOUNG! Carl is one the three storm chasers killed in the El #Reno #tornado on May 31st, 2013 (with Tim and son Paul #Samaras). We were chasing as a team for 12 years. Carls service is today. All my thoughts are with you, my great friend! After a slow start in the season you had finally some good luck with tornado intercepts and you thought of me. You tried to convince me to come out. Thank you for this. My work did not permit this time. And you tried even to attract me with spicy Doritos (one of the base chaser food). Thank you Carl for this. After the fact it is the only time I preferred not to share your chase and I am deeply saddened why you, Tim and Paul had to go. RIP! @thephotosociety @natgeo #TPS, #storm #stormchasing #chasing
