And then we started talking about getting a second dog. We randomly filled out an application (which was more dense than a college application), and got us mentally prepared for what a new puppy would entail. The next evening, we were having dinner outside at our favorite restaurant in Great Barrington when we heard a familiar voice,
“Caroline, hi! Happy First Anniversary! Need a puppy?!”
We turned around and there was one of Caroline’s friends (
@barkshirefarm and dog rescuer) holding a puppy. Without missing a beat, Gary said, “That’s our girl.” And the next afternoon, we picked up the sixth member of our family (we had no idea our family was so big until she arrived and then what felt like a quiet home with two nonchalant cats and a sweet old dog has now turned into a hilarious, adorable zoo of love).
We named her Beatrice, from Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, Be for short. As in, “To Be or not to Be.” Together, our dogs are “Be Tru,” which is the
@miltonacademy moto, “Dare to Be True.”
Beatrice was found in a ditch in Alabama by a UPS driver. A few days later, the rescue found her mother, a yellow lab, and brother, a border collie mix, nearby. Starved and fighting for her life as a tiny puppy, they brought her to the vet, where she nearly died a second time of parvo. When she was being fostered, she was bitten in the face by another dog, resulting in a deep scar above her eye.
All this to say, she is a mighty little survivor and seems very, very grateful to be home. She’s also been an incredible snuggly, easy puppy who has learned her training and respected the house rules, aside from eating the wooden leg of Caroline’s desk chair.
