I don’t quite know how I came across suminagashi. It’s as if I had always known it existed and then one day I bought the materials and tried. It was there, waiting for me. What struck me most, as I began to go deeper, is that suminagashi is ephemeral by nature. There are no original texts. No ancient manuals. It’s an art that has been passed down through centuries, from master to student. I find this deeply fascinating. The idea that it cannot be pinned down, fully defined. I’ve been working on a personal seal to sign my suminagashi pieces. The kanji I chose is 幽 Making suminagashi is how I feel when I don’t have words, somewhere between visible and hidden. Subtle, mysterious, soft in its darkness. Just like ink moving on water. 🖤
