This summer, I spent 5 weeks in Vienna in the frame of ImpulsTanz and was part of the educational program ATLAS mentored by Christopher Matthews. As part of ATLAS, I developed a project which deals with the notion of hanging, lounging, resting, releasing, doing nothing, relaxing, …
For that I observed how people are resting on the mattresses of the IKEA (an inner city version) very close to where I lived.
I came to understand that people were not actually resting but instead performing to rest as a way to test and find a suitable mattress. The act of testing mattresses became super exciting for me… people without a somatic practice suddenly sense into their body, lean towards their more-than-human counterpart and feel into the encounter. I observed different methods of getting to know a mattress from funny bouncing movements to the re-enactment of cuddling with ones partner(s). I believe to have seen that some people projected themselves and the mattress into the future, that they pictured what experiences they would have with and on the mattress. This touched me a lot.
Romy, Eimi
@e_mlegit and Chris
@formedview where excellent partners in this first observation phase. At the bookstore
@softcover.shop I found two books that inspired the research: How did you sleep last night by Michikazu Matsune and Dirty Furniture #6 Bed. And with Isabella
@maydenise I had a very inspiring conversation around resting that resonates with me still!!
I invited Marie
@nurraumarie , Edgar
@edgarlessig and Philip
@escphilip to join me for the next phase of the project where we re-visited and re-enacted the observed methods and composed with the found material. We had a lot of fun and cherished the excitement of testing mattresses and I am curious where our findings will lead to in the future. At the same time it felt slightly disconnected from the original wish to deal with resting and releasing (as I mentioned above: mattress-testing is not actual resting but performed resting). Thus, in the third part of the project Marie, Edgar, Philip and I returned to actual resting. More in the next post…
