Ten years ago someone shattered my car window. My dad helped me clean the shards of glass out of the backseat of my first car: a maroon, Chevy Malibu, fondly referred to as the Malibuck. As we gathered the pieces to throw in the trash, inspiration struck and thus I created “Seven Years Bad Luck”. The idea was to take something shitty and rebuild myself with broken pieces. I have loved her (this metaphorical version of me) from the very first tiny piece of glass lovingly glued onto canvas. This past year I packed all of my art up carefully for not one, but two moves. Somewhere along the way, she was damaged. It felt fitting that 28 year old me would get to reflect on the headspace of 18 year old me and in some way, heal the hurt. So I decided to show visible healing by sewing her back up. I chose 3 colors: 1) gold, in reference to kintsugi, to make something broken beautiful again, 2) pink, a color that is feminine and delicate and reminds me of how much I have changed since 18, and 3) red, to show that healing hurts and sometimes you bleed in the process. In honor of my healing touches, she will be given a new name: Ten Years Softer.
Using a single 2x4, Ryan built this keepsake/mailbox with a lock and key. Some good ole Danish Oil and it was ready to be used. #woodworking #commission
