For fans of: city and colour, dashboard confessional, and indie folk music.
The new EP from Cardinal Arms takes its listeners on a transformative and healing journey of reflecting on what makes love so special. Through the use of gentle guitar riffs and soothing tenor vocals, Cardinal Arms explores the intricate beauties of a lover long lost.
Opening with the lovely “Electric Road,” we are introduced to the subject of the record; a kind, vibrant lover who is compared to a “city on a hill;” referencing the title. The meditative guitar, alongside the artist’s gentle vocals transport the listener into this artful depiction of the intricacies and beauties of this lover.
The artist continues the listener’s journey into the following track; “She’s in Reno,” which laments the distance between the speaker and the lover being described. Rather than airing grievances about the distance and time spent apart, the speaker asks their lover to be patient with them; and gently reminds her that she is not alone.
We then are transported to the third track, “Citrine”; a love song referencing several nature metaphors featured throughout the EP, as well as some references to spirituality.
The following track, “I Adore You,” is best summed up with the three words in its title. This soft and clear track, with stunning fingerpicked guitar alongside Cardinal Arms’ expressive yet soft tenor vocals delivers a beautiful message of the adoration of another.
Wrapping up the record, “I Will Find You Among the Stars” features a more rhythmic guitar pattern, and speaks of a love eternal as the shining comfort of the stars above. The EP ends with a stunning full band outro; which brilliantly expresses the passion of the love that the artist has seemed to hold back until the very end.
All in all, Cardinal Arms has truly given their audience a masterful piece of music for even the rainiest of days, or the most heartbreaking of love affairs; a reminder that love truly does conquer all.
