Vision means nothing if your team can’t carry it with you. Recently, there has been a lot of back and forth about the skills gap among young Nigerians, but not enough is being said about what can actually be done to remedy the issue. The best creative leaders don’t just execute great work. They intentionally develop people capable of carrying the weight of the vision with them. Over the years, CFC has taken young people who knew nothing about production design or the art department, and today, some of them have progressed to become AMVCA nominees for Best Production Design, art directors, and even professionals thriving in related fields like event planning, furniture making etc Because at the end of the day, it is the team you build that determines how excellently the work gets done. If you’re a young person, serious about growing in the art department, you should follow @captfrost #workforcedevelopment #fyp #artdepartment #productiondesigner

Most people think the art department is just about “decor.” It’s not. It’s one of the most practical ways to build real, profitable skills without even realizing it. Here are a few 👇 Event Planning: Working in the art department means there are some scenes that require you to set up an event and bring it to life from scratch. You source vendors, handle decor, and deliver a full experience that feels real on camera. Do this over time, and you’ve built the foundation to become an event planner. Interior Design: You’re constantly shaping spaces to match characters, moods, and stories. You learn how a room can feel warm, cold, rich, or empty just by design choices. That’s the core of interior styling. Carpentry: Sometimes what you need doesn’t exist… so you build it. From props to full set structures, you learn how to turn ideas into physical reality. That’s a monetizable skill on its own. Spatial Branding: You begin to understand how environments influence perception. How a space can make a brand feel premium, soft, bold, or cultural. That’s branding… just in physical form. Food Styling: Every detail on a plate matters. Color, texture, placement… all working together to tell a story visually. That’s art direction, just in a different format. These aren’t random skills. They’re transferable, valuable and in high demand. So while it may look like you’re just “setting up,” you’re actually building a career that can take you anywhere. If you’re trying to grow, don’t overlook the art department. And if you know someone who needs direction, send this to them. Follow @captfrost if you’re serious about growing your career in the art department 🎬✨ #productiondesigner #artdepartment #filmmaking #transferableskills #careersinfilm

Over the years as a production designer, I’ve seen talented people in the art department get fired. Not because they didn’t love the craft or they were not creative. But because film sets are execution spaces. The stakes are high, the timelines are tight, and excellence is not optional. Sometimes the smallest oversight can cost the entire department. I’ve also seen what happens after. Morale drops. People question their talent. Some even walk away from production design completely. But here’s the truth most people don’t say out loud: Getting fired on a film set is rarely personal. It’s usually about what the production needs in that moment. Every experienced art director or production designer has a tough story from set. Every professional in this field has learned something the hard way. If you’ve ever lost a job on set, this is your sign to get back in the game. Learn from it, sharpen your systems, strengthen your process then show up better. Because the art department is built by people who keep going. Follow @captfrost to get better on your journey in the art department. #artdepartment #fyp #filmset

There are somethings you can only learn on the Job - no amount of classes can teach you certain things. I approach teaching production design to my team members by passing knowledge to them. I believe the best way to train interns in the art department is by delegating tasks to them. You learn by doing. Set life is practical. Most of it. If you’re trying to grow in the art department, follow @captfrost to learn more on your journey Repost your fave slide and add anything I missed in the comments 👇 #productiondesigner #artdirection #fyp #filmmaking #movieset

PRODUCTION DESIGN for me starts with understanding people and the spaces they live in. For Everything Is New Again, it was about me giving each location a personality that matched the characters, their lives, and the world they moved in. From developing the moodboards to curating props, artwork, and layouts, every detail was considered. Each space and location was designed to feel lived-in and to hold up on camera. Long days, long nights, but seeing it all come together on screen makes it worth it. Special thanks to the director @nazonuzo for the trust and collaboration, and to everyone who brought this project to life.
