Today is Day 6 of #springintoboardgames hosted by
@bordercityboardgamer , and the theme is “Awaken,” chosen by
@theliterarymeeple .
The frogs are officially awake from brumation—just in time to hop into the spotlight with Pondscape from
@capstone_games . In this tableau-style game designed by Tomáš Holek (SETI & Galileo Galilei), you build a 3x5 aquatic ecosystem of frog species while matching them with their ideal environments to score points.
The artwork by Jiří Kůs (Lost Ruins of Arnak and more) is, once again, stunning. It’s colorful, lively and full of personality—each card feels distinct while still blending together.
The gameplay is simple but satisfying. On your turn, you select one of three cards from the market, move the jumping frog based on the slot you chose, and place a card from your hand into your personal 3x5 pond. It’s nice you have the freedom to place cards anywhere, rather than being locked into adjacency rules—especially since some frogs do care about adjacent types for scoring. Each frog has its own scoring condition, and a shared chart helps determine how valuable your frog types are. Nice amount of strategy and plays rather quick.
Any issues? Two very minor things. We wish the market had five cards instead of three to help with unfortunate options. (This might be fixed at 3 or 4 players.) The jumping frog mechanic is interesting, but we think it would feel smoother moving back and forth instead of looping underneath—since at the edges, 1 more gives you identical placement.
We have a few games in at two players, and its a nice balance of strategy and flexibility and a quick play time. The smaller card size might raise an eyebrow at first, but it’s actually a smart choice—especially when playing with 3–4 players and table space gets tight.
If you enjoy quick tableau builders with gorgeous artwork and satisfying decisions, all in a small box under 30 minutes, Pondscape is an easy recommendation.
