At Cowgirlblues, green is more than just a colour and sustainability lies at the heart of everything they do. Their yarns are hand-dyed to create luxurious, vibrant, and natural fibres, treasured by discerning crafters around the world.

Wool remains one of natureโs most versatile performance fibres. The Wool Forum section at the Functional Fabric Fair served as a timely reminder that wool continues to offer compelling value in performance and technical textiles. Its natural breathability, temperature regulation, comfort, durability, and adaptability make it highly relevant for brands and product developers seeking fibres that deliver on both function and sustainability.
The Functional Fabric Fair was held in Portland, Oregon, United States, from 7 to 9 April 2026. Take a look at the images for some of the wool fabric highlights featured in the Wool Forum section at the fair.

Following our recent focus on wool classers, we now turn our attention to wool brokers and auctions.
Wool brokers are the โmarket connectorsโ of the value chain and the link between the producers and the auction system. It is here where buyers, often representing international clients, compete for a share of South Africaโs premium wool.
Explore the images to learn more about this vital stage of the wool journey, and feel free to share your questions about the wool value chain in the comments below.

Even though Merino wool on its own is the perfect fibre for many uses, it can also be blended with other natural or synthetic fibres. This gives the final product different characteristics for different purposes, while still maintaining the benefits of wool.
For example, some manufacturers will blend wool with cashmere to make coats and knitwear, or with synthetic fibres such as elastane to increase a garmentโs stretch, durability, and overall fit and shape retention.
Feel free to let us know in the comments if you would be interested in a series that unpacks different Merino wool blends, and how it affects the final product.

With Module 0 of the REDA 'from sheep to shop' internship programme complete, we pause to reflect on this important first stage as Theo departs to Italy for the next chapter.
This opening module laid a strong foundation in the South African wool value chain, covering sheep farming practices, farm visits, wool classing, brokering and buying, wool testing, standards, traceability, and engagement with key industry stakeholders.
For Cape Wools, it has been a privilege to contribute to this foundational phase alongside Theo, sharing the South African wool story from farm to market. We look forward to seeing the journey continue in Italy as the programme progresses.
