CAPE responds to the federal government's gutting of industrial carbon pricing: https://loom.ly/1APp5i4
"The cost of theses decisions will be measured in lives."
Is it Groundhog Day? đ”âđ« More than a year after trying to dismantle Vancouverâs flagship climate policies and getting voted down after a tidal wave of opposition, Mayor Ken Sim is at it again, just one year after he tried it the first timeâby law, the soonest you can bring something back for a vote. His eagerness to gut climate is showing. đ
Yet again, Mayor Sim is trying to reverse decades of climate progress and put polluting methane gas back into buildings. He might be relentlessâŠbut so are we.
đȘ Let's send a flood of messages to City Council before the May 20 council vote to remind them that they work for the people of Vancouver, not gas industry lobbyists. Comment CLIMATE to send your message.
Today, the City of Torontoâs Executive Committee passed a $1 million expansion to the Free Air Conditioner Program â which will fund the provision and installation of 2400 air conditioners in time for this summer!
This a nearly fivefold increase over last yearâs budget allocation, and will ensure that every person that applied to the program will receive an air conditioner.
However, we know that this is only a short-term intervention. Tenants need a maximum indoor temperature bylaw that caps temperatures in their apartments at 26°C, and weâll continue to organize until every tenant is safe, healthy, and cool in their apartment.

âTeresa Patry is feeling gaslit by Albertaâs oil and gas regulator â and sheâs not the only one.â
Teresa is a farmer and rancher like many rural Albertans, and two ageing oil wells on her property are hurting her livestock - and her family. According to an independent air quality assessment, those two wells are venting a steady stream of methane onto her farm and around her home. Teresa has followed all the right steps and reported the issue to the AER, but at every stage theyâve failed to protect her and her family. And sheâs not alone - thousands of landowners across Alberta have been impacted by ageing and orphan wells on their properties, which the AER continues to turn a blind eye to.
Enough is enough. Albertans deserve better. Read the full article on CBCâs website, or listen here: /show/3G1S2oe5LlGapLe7jYkRig

[Press Statement] In a joint statement by organisations working on opposing fossil fuel advertising, which @fossilfreesa signed and supported, a call was made for a fossil ad ban in Santa Marta.
This statement is linked to the first conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta, which was attended by @noxolomfocwa , #FossilAdBan advocacy campaigner at @fossilfreesa .
She said: âFossil fuel advertising doesnât just sell products â it sells a false idea of development. This greenwashing actively drives climate obstruction by delaying real solutions, while also undermining free, prior and informed consent by denying communities honest, transparent information. If we are serious about a just transition, we must end the narratives that mislead our people and protect an industry that harms our land, our rights, and our future.â

Santa Marta: momentumâŠbut big gaps.
For the first time, key voices â NGOs, academics, civil society â converged on one clear ask: restrict fossil fuel advertising. That's real progress from the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels.
But health was almost entirely absent from the conversation. Canada didn't push for it either.
Fossil fuels are increasingly recognized alongside tobacco and alcohol as products that harm health. Policy needs to catch up.
There were bright spots: France put forward the first detailed national roadmap to phase out fossil fuel advertising. Amsterdam is already moving â turning commitments into actual restrictions on the ground.
Now we need governments to bring climate and health together in policy and for Canada not to fall behind. #FossilFuelPhaseOut

Today is @healthyschoolsday ! Weâre calling for healthy, sustainable and climate-resilient outdoor learning and play settings for all children. Evidence shows that natural outdoor settings with tree canopies and natural surfacing are not only beneficial to nearly every facet of childrenâs well-being but also yield significant resilience benefits in the face of climate change. Yet not all schools and child care programs are equipped with these settings. Thatâs why this year we're proud to join 50+ organizations calling on all levels of government to show leadership and take action. Learn more and join the action at the link in bio.

"Amaze, amaze, amaze." đ
Earlier this month, astronauts glimpsed our blue planet from the other side of the moon, and the space mission team quoted this line from Project Hail Mary, a beloved story about saving our beautiful, resilient, and fragile home.
The health of that blue dot is inseparable from the health of our patients, our communities, and everyone we love. We are continuously amazed by all the CAPE doctors who volunteer their time, their knowledge, and their voices to protect this intricate web of life.
Together, we are over 3,000 physicians and health care professionals, backed by over 30,000 supporters who are doing this for the benefit of all: our kids in schools, our loved ones in care homes, our friends working in the heat, our neighbours who are unhoused, the coming generations.
This photo honours the memory of Dr. Marianne Rev (centre), pictured here last April with CAPE BC volunteers Dr. Douglas Courtemanche and Dr. Linda Thyer after marching for a better climate future.
"Amaze, amaze, amaze."
That could also describe our CAPE community. Like the best planetary-salvation stories, our volunteers and supporters give us hope that determined people working together can still save the luminous, irreplaceable dot we call home.
Happy Earth Day and Happy National Volunteer Appreciation Week! Two special occasions that couldn't be more perfectly aligned for CAPE. đ

In Santa Marta, governments and civil society will come together for the first global conference on transitioning away from fossil fuels. And health must be at the center of every decision.
CAPE will be participating on the ground, bringing the voice of health professionals into this critical moment. Because the air we breathe, the heat we face, and the systems we build are all public health issues.
As Leah Temper put it: health canât be a side note: it must become a political imperative in the shift away from fossil fuel dependence.
This week is about more than energy. Itâs about protecting people's health.
