🎶 Midnight Melodies - Solo RPG Review 🎶

👥 Solo
🕔 45mins +
The grim reaper has recently employed you to help figure out why some people have died without his authorization. Every night whilst working your shift as a pianist, you'll receive a name of another life taken. It's your job to figure out the mystery before sunrise!
____
🎲 How Does It Play? 🎲
Similar to other solo rpgs, you'll begin the starting story and put together a character sheet, before progressing onto the story. To help aid your journey, you'll roll dice to determine who you meet and what happens - but half of the story relies on your imagination! You'll have to use the prompts given to you to put the mystery together.
You'll need: 1d6, 1d12 and somewhere to write your notes!

💭 My Thoughts 💭
• Absolutely love the idea of the story! Such a fun and unique concept. I had a great time enjoying the duality of being a jazz pianist as well as a "detective" for the grim reaper!
• Although I loved the story, I do feel the beginning could be improved by being slightly more descriptive. Setting the scene for these solo rpgs are so important for immersion, and I think it could've had a little more explanation to the lore.
• The pictures used are all from Canva, so some weren't the best quality.
• I liked that it had a table to help you if you can't think of "complications" or "advantages" you encounter. Helps ease the creative pressure a bit!
• I felt it would've been better if you gained a bit more information before starting each mystery. My understanding was you just got a piece of paper with the name of the individual murdered, but I felt you can't really learn much from this. Even if it included the "motifs" on the note to help, I feel it would've helped me start each case off better. It just felt a bit like I had to do a bit "too" much of the work!

This morning I poured myself a cup of coffee, pulled a Miles Davis LP from the shelf and immersed myself in the solo RPG, Midnight Melodies.
You are a jazz pianist, working with the grim reaper for the Department of Unauthorised Deaths to unravel mysteries. Each night after your performance you find a name in the rip jar. The reaper has sent you a task. Using supernatural talents you must report back before sunrise.
I had so much fun with this. It’s great for beginners to solo RPGs and those who have more experience. You can either follow a “Freeform” approach where you can roll a die for a series of motifs which you can then weave into a story as inspiration or you can use challenge tables to guide your encounters. Alternatively, if you’re looking for more structure then you can follow a story beats guide which takes you through each “chord” of the night’s mystery.
I followed a mixture of the three. You can help to guide your story by drawing on your supernatural abilities (blue notes) - some you will be more adept at than others.
Over the course of your investigation, each time you unravel a key clue in the mystery you gather a chord and tone. You roll to determine which you gather at each point and at the end you can put these together to form a melody of the night which adds a lovely conclusion to the RPG.
My story followed the murder of Cassandra Holt, an eloquent diplomat who was murdered in her apartment. After finding her vintage camera the pianist saw a character wrapped in shadow lurking in the background of the cocktail party photos. After finding a scrawled note to Amelia, the investigator tracks this name down to a dock side jazz club, The Blue C, to find her guide. Our investigator tracks the spirit to a warehouse where it fed on silence, secrecy and selfishness to help corruption take root across the city.

🌬 Against the Wind is a solo RPG sandbox game, with open exploration, set in a harsh cold climate. In this traditional fantasy world the adventure is all up to you.

📜 One of the best things about this game is that no Game Master is required, just a couple of 6 sided dice and a magical imagination. In place of the traditional GM is a Game Machine, with tables which help build and enrich the story and wider world. The instructions on gameplay, map creation and character building are well written and easy to follow. Drawn amid brutal winter landscapes and relentless blizzards, the fantasy artwork and illustrations are great and intensify the story’s fight for survival.
I was sent a copy of the game by the publisher for review purposes, opinions are my own.
