Cao Shu's artist's book, “Book of Hecate”, is forged from thirteen black metal plates. The volume houses historical images and contents related to the effects of residual radiation, each etched by the artist with fluorescent lines. In the dimness, these luminous tracings emanate a faint glow, summoning the specters of enduring imperial rivalries, nuclear tests, and the indelible scars of individual historical trauma.

🖤Cao Shu (b. 1987) delves into historically grounded scientific speculation and a personalized archaeology of technology. Through a diverse array of media—from 3D-rendered animations and video game installations to multi-channel video works and sculptures—he constructs narrative labyrinths that interweave the real and the virtual together, forging digital “archaeological sites of memory.”
Shu’s works have been presented in institutional exhibitions at Kunsthaus Baselland (Basel), Macao Museum of Art, White Rabbit Gallery (Sydney), Matadero Madrid, M+ Museum (Hong Kong), UCCA Dune Museum, Power Station of Art (Shanghai), Asia Society Hong Kong Center, BY ART MATTERS, OCAT Shanghai, National Museum of China, and Sleep Center (New York). He has held solo exhibitions at the HOW Art Museum (Shanghai), Zhejiang Art Museum, Imagokinectics by BY ART MATTERS (Hangzhou), Muffatwerk (Munich), and Yokohama Koza Studio (Koganecho). His works are held in the permanent collections of KADIST, White Rabbit Gallery, BY ART MATTERS, Zhejiang Art Museum, HOW Art Museum, and Yaoshan Art Foundation, among others.
