Parce que sabi veut dire savoureux. Et sabi veut dire savoir. Ici, on fait les deux.
✨☀️A time was had at Rooted Joy’s inaugural event, Black Joy Mini Retreat: Ode to Our Roots! 🌻🌿 It was a pleasure to rethink how we connect with past traditions, dance, music and foods. ☀️✨
We had a great time learning the connection of the Nyabhingi movement from its East African roots all the way to traditional Jamaican 🇯🇲 dances from Must Be Faby @mustbe_faby 🪘
We spoke of how the African Diaspora intentionally creates culture, tradition and community while eating the most amazing Moqueca, Badjiki, Abarà and more. So grateful for Cantine Toca’s @cantinetoca explanation of how West African 🌍 foods travelled all the way to Brazil 🇧🇷 and other parts of South America. 🍲
Thank you all so much for showing up for yourselves and your community! ✊🏾⚡️

Salut tout le monde! L’infolettre est de retour via courriel, chaîne IG et WhatsApp! J’espère que vous l’aviez apprécié et avez vu les surprises affichées dessus!
Meet Ode to Joy's Caterer Cantine Toca Toca @Cantinetoca is named after the famous minibuses found in Guinea Bissau. It is also known as "taxi-brousse" in Francophone Africa or "chiva" in Colombia. As a Black vegan, my idea behind Cantine Toca Toca is to offer plant-based alternatives & innovations inspired from West African cuisine.
Evy Mendes is a self-taught chef with a background in chemical engineering. She created « Cantine Toca Toca » after a conversation with friends about finding vegan options in West African food. In the kitchen, she’s mixing both her experiences in food engineering and inspirations from her childhood to create authentic meals.

Black Joy Mini-Retreats are an affordable 4-hour wellness retreat dedicated to Black self-care, Black healing, and Black empowerment. ☀️
Through a partnership between Rooted Joy and Black Mental Health Connections Montreal, Black Joy Mini-Retreats offer a safe(r) space for members of the Black community to navigate their mental, physical and emotional health and cope with everyday stressors in their lives through different activities and healing modalities.Topics that are relevant to the Black community will be explored in an intimate setting. A judgment-free zone, Black Joy Mini-Retreats are a space to heal, reflect, and grow.🌿
Launching the Rooted Joy initiative, Ode to Our Roots will start with MustBeFaby’s dance workshop blending ancestral dances with contemporary culture and while sharing the relevance of ancestral practices to healing, mental wellbeing, and community building. The activities reconnects participants with aspects of African heritage, and practices that enrich self identity, promote self esteem, and joy!
Afterwards we will discuss how understanding ancestral roots and identity impacts mental health, self-image and ultimately self-esteem. This BMHC-facilitated conversation will center honouring ancestral and sacred practices of the African Diaspora in terms of accessing holistic care, managing intergenerational gifts/traumas and healing in pursuit of Black joy.
