Via the artist: “Painter Patricia Canelake sets up a new body of work outside her studio in Knife River, Minnesota. Anthropomorphic Deer & Moose portray a Northwoods theme and clothing & symbols within the paintings give hints to artist’s intent. Scandinavian resistance hats, Northern Germany fishing shirts, Greek protective eye, forget-me-not flowers all point to meanings within the paintings. The Animal Gaze is meant to grab the viewer & create a connection. As humans wear clothing representing who we are , so do these large animals.”

Gesture takes us on hiatus from Canelake’s striking large-scale oil paintings to focus on the iconic subject matter established throughout her career.
The figures are gestural. The subjects float in a balance between storytelling and rough elegance. The narrative is a simple expression influenced by her time at The Fine Arts Work Center Print Studio in Provincetown, Massachusetts and the North Shore region of Lake Superior where she lives and works.
