Top 5 things I do to make sure I get the shot 🎥
* Lock exposure before anything else! I set shutter, ISO, and aperture first so nothing drifts mid-take. If exposure is solid, I can focus on framing and performance instead of chasing settings.
* Nail focus like it’s non-negotiable (and don’t shoot wide open unless you have to) Face/eye detection is a tool, not a crutch. I double-check critical focus on interviews and always zoom in to confirm sharpness before rolling. And I avoid shooting wide open unless I need the separation or low light—because even slight focus misses become way more obvious at f/1.4–f/2.
* Build lighting so it can’t fail mid-shoot Key, fill, and hair light are placed to stay consistent even if talent shifts a bit. I don’t depend on perfect marks, I depend on controlled light.
* Watch framing like a hawk (not just the monitor) I’m constantly checking headroom, eyeline, and background distractions. If something feels off, I fix it immediately instead of hoping to crop later.
* Run a mental checklist before you press record. Audio levels, white balance, battery, media, focus mode, and framing. I don’t roll until everything is solid because fixing it in post never hits the same as getting it right in-camera.
