Candlebox (1993), the debut album by Seattle band Candlebox, captures the spirit of a group that emerged from the same fertile music scene that produced many of the era’s biggest rock acts. Formed in Seattle, Washington, the band blended heavy guitar work with emotional, introspective songwriting that helped them quickly gain attention. - The album’s standout tracks—“Far Behind,” “You,” “Cover Me,” and “Change” drove its success, with “Far Behind” becoming the defining song of their career. The track carries a particularly poignant backstory: it was written as a tribute to Andrew Wood, the late frontman of Mother Love Bone. Martin admired Wood, viewing him as a massive influence and a “canary in the coal mine” for the Seattle scene. The song was written with Wood in mind to express the pain of losing him to a heroin overdose, and that sense of loss is felt throughout. At the same time, Martin recalled Wood’s positive influence, noting that Wood taught him to do what you want to do, and to move on to find his footing in life, adding a layer of reflection and gratitude beneath the grief. - There’s a raw sincerity in Martin’s vocals and a strong melodic core throughout the album that makes it both powerful and memorable.
