BUG’s Eye View 🐛🕶️ + BIRDS 🐦🎶 at Canco Park 🌸🌼 Columbine and Zizia are popping in the Southside Native Habitat Garden at Canco Park. These early bloomers are some of the first really important food sources for the native pollinators emerging before everything else fully wakes up for the season. 🐝🐝 One of the favorites is the little Cellophane Bee who crawls up underneath the Columbine’s hanging flowers to get at the nectar and pollen hidden inside. Look closely and you’ll see these tiny little actions happening all around us. This is why native plants and habitat gardens matter. The timing of these blooms lines up with the life cycles of the insects, which supports the birds, and everything else connected to them. Nature is smart like that. 🌱🐦 ❤️ Come visit Canco Park, it’s really buzzing lately. #cancopark #jerseycity #journalsquare #nativeplants #urbangarden

Spring has sprung! And so have JC's flowers. So we're bringing back Sketch in the Garden, now with an added location! 🌼 🌱 🌺 Join us at @westernslopegardenjc and @cancopark for some beautiful greenery, fresh air, and casual art-making. Caretakers will walk us through the spaces' native plant life and we'll follow it up with a casual sketching session. We'll have extra sketching supplies, but we encourage you to bring your own if you have them. Note: Western Slope garden is not accessible. Canco Park's upper level is accessible via a concrete wheelchair ramp.

Bird Friends - We're hosting a fun free event this weekend at the Jersey Art Book Fair 2026! 𓆃 May 3rd : Art Workshop: A Homegrown Field Guide to Jersey City ✏✶⋆ ˚。𓅨⋆。°✩ We’ll be leading a walk through nearby Canco Park, demonstrating the art of birding through sound, sight, and feeling — then heading to Mana Contemporary to craft entries for a collaborative, hyper-local field guide. Using collage, drawing, and description, participants document birds and other living things: a specific mockingbird on their block, a distinctive park pigeon, something imagined, or something dreamed. We want this to be a fun casual mix of art and birding: All levels of artistic talent are welcome! Feel free to contribute through collage or drawing or text or ideas. We will be bringing some of our own field guides to share and inspire - and we ask attendees to feel free to bring your own favorite field guides to share and inspire others! Ideal for: urban explorers, pocket park and empty lot enthusiasts, listers, naturalists, people who enjoy nature journaling or collage making, bird lovers, or anyone curious about any of the above! 📝 Free but RSVP ( LINK IN BIO ) ⏰ Time: 9AM – 11AM 📍 🗺️ Meet up Location: 888 Newark Ave, The Program Tent @ Mana Contemporary / Jersey Art Book Fair 2026 #jerseyartbookfair2026 @itsdense #DIYFIELDGUIDE #feministbirdclub @cancopark [Image is of a collage of various field guides. A picture of a fern, a description of bird call, a selection of warbler identification from beneath the birds, imposed over the guides is a photo of a grackle screaming on a chain link fence and an image of some FBC members bird watching near Journal Square towers. Text reads "a homegrown guide to Jersey City. Bring your own Field guides, insights into your city, surroundings and bird lore" May 3rd 9 - 11AM Jersey art book Fair 888 Newark, The Program Tent]

Important Action Item: Tell DEP to DENY a new waste facility in our neighborhood! Why? 🚛 260 truck trips a day 🕓 Truck activity as early as 4AM 🗑️ 750 tons of waste daily NJ law is clear: 💨 We are an overburdened community, meaning we get more pollution than we should. If a new project adds pollution here, it must be denied- unless it serves a compelling public interest for this community. That means: ✔️ real need for this community ✔️ necessary ✔️ no better alternative ❌ jobs don’t count This project doesn’t meet that bar. We already have similar facilities nearby. This only adds more trucks. more pollution. more burden. This is not for us. Not for our children. Not for an environment meant for families to thrive. 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 PLEASE show up for the public hearing (IRL or virtually) and certainly submit email comments before May 28. I/ an ways click of a button prompt. 📍 Public Hearing: April 28, 6–8PM In person: The Hall on West Side 60 West Side Ave, Jersey City 💻 Virtual option available (link on flyer or in bio) 📝 Comments due: May 28 (link on flyer or in bio) Thanks friends 💪

Meet Dawn @skootymiss and her favorite plant #buttonbush or #cephalanthusoccidentalis If you love nature, plants and wildlife there is a good chance you already met Dawn or have been in the same nature walk but did not realize it. Dawn is a passionate friend and advocate for the JC community; she is a dutiful caretaker of the natural environment and every project dreamt up by Dawn is born from a place of creativity, collaboration and enthusiasm. She is also one of the founder’s of @cancopark as well as the manager of @jcreservoir . Here is what she wanted to say about her favorite plant; “Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) is a native shrub that does it all. It shows up for wildlife, manages stormwater, and brings a little bit of magic into the landscape. It belongs in our city. It provides real shelter for urban wildlife and soaks up stormwater like a champ. You’ll find it right at home in rain gardens, like the ones along the outer slopes of Canco Park, slowing water down and helping it return to the ground while supporting life all around it. And then it blooms ! ! ! Perfect white spheres float above the leaves, soft and spiky like tiny satellites. Lightly fragrant, glowing in the summer evening light, they stop people in their tracks. By fall, those blooms turn into deep red, nut-like seed heads that hold through winter. The leaves flash bright golden yellow before dropping, and what remains feeds birds overwinter when they need it most. And if that wasn’t enough, Buttonbush is a larval host for the Titan Sphinx Moth, a wild little creature that looks like a cross between a moth and a hummingbird, hovering as it feeds. This isn’t just a shrub. It’s habitat. It’s stormwater infrastructure. It’s a full ecosystem in one plant. Like all native plants, it’s a tool in our defense against climate change.” #nativeplantmonth #CancoPark #Reservoir3

🌼🐦❤️ Sunshine + native plants at Canco Park! Meet Salix discolor (aka Pussy Willow) a native shrub thriving in wet, sunny spots like the Dey St rain garden. ➡️ Its soft, silvery blooms are called catkins and are importantly fuel for early spring wildlife: 🐝 Queen bumblebees 🦋 Butterflies & moths (and their caterpillars) 🐦 Birds using seed fluff for nests 🌿 One plant. Hundreds of species supported. This is urban habitat ! #jerseycity #cancopark #mayorsmonarchpledgejc #pollinators #urbanhanitat

Common milkweed “Asclepias syriaca” Perennial native wildflower essential to the Monarch butterfly’s survival. After months of wind, ice, and snow, a pod finally splits. Silk floss catches the air. Seeds lift, drift, snag on branches, tumble to the ground. Scratched, scraped, frozen, thawed. Seeds waiting. Spring begins longer days, the hours are a signal. A brave bright green shoot escapes and pushes into the soil. No going back. Roots take hold. Leaves unfurl. One day, buds and flowers. On another, a Monarch lands, feeds, lays eggs. Tiny caterpillars devour the plant completely. And still it will set seed, and begin again. Again and again and again. This is why we plant natives. This is resilience. This is habitat. 🌿🦋 Thanks to @npsnjhudsoncounty @xercessociety @bergencountyaudubon @rohslersallendalenursery @nativeplantsocietynj volunteers & donors. #CancoPark #NativePlants #Milkweed #MonarchHabitat #UrbanWildlife
