Join us for an author talk with Fiona Wright, who will discuss her new book Kill Your Boomers! 🔖About Kill Your Boomers: The great Australian dream is slipping away for Keira. No partner, no house, and no kids at 30-ish. Her part-time job as a nanny to twins provides barely enough money for the G&Ts she finds necessary to get through her other job as a freelance copywriter. Her solution? The bank of Mum and Dad. ⏳️Canada Bay History: Mortlake Ferry If you’ve ever driven onto the flat-bottomed ferry that links Mortlake and Putney across the Parramatta River, you’re taking the same trip locals have been making since 1928. Officially, it’s the Mortlake Ferry, but people still call it the Putney Punt — local names tend to stick. The ferry is the only remaining vehicle punt on Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River. It was built to ease pressure on the Rhodes Ferry and provide a direct link to Mortlake’s industrial waterfront, once dominated by the Gasworks. Costing £4,000, it was officially opened on 16 May 1928 by the Hon Richard Ball, NSW Minister for Lands, who predicted a ferry would not satisfy residents for long and that a bridge would eventually be needed. When the Ryde Bridge opened in 1935, the Rhodes Ferry closed and traffic on the Mortlake Ferry fell. Even so, the punt kept operating, serving industries including the Green Point Shipbuilding Yards during World War II. The sites it originally connected have since become housing and foreshore parkland, including Wangal Reserve. Today, the ferry carries cars, pedestrians and cycles, keeping its place as a practical and charming link across the river. The ferry’s future hasn’t always been certain. In 1989, after a new bridge opened alongside the old Ryde crossing, closure was proposed, but a heritage listing and strong local support kept it running. Thinking about taking a trip on the Mortlake Ferry? The service is free of charge and operates on demand on weekdays from 6:45am to 9:25am and 2:45pm to 6:15pm, and on weekends and public holidays from 10:30am to 5:30pm, between Hilly Street, Mortlake and Pellisier Road, Putney. 📸 Images: Mortlake Punt in 1950 and 2011
