The nation’s canals and rivers are enjoyed by millions of people day in, day out, for all sorts of reasons. Whether you love the steady chug of an engine, are fascinated by history that soars or find joy being closer to nature, we’re the charity for your canals. Together, with the help of our growing community of supporters and volunteers, we can keep your canals and rivers alive. 📍 Caen Hill Locks, Kennet & Avon Canal #CanalRiverTrust #InlandWaterways

Our canals have a long history… and occasionally they make it onto the big screen too. 🎬 The new @peakyblinders The Immortal Man, now streaming on Netflix, features several scenes filmed right here on our network! We worked with writer Steven Knight and the production team from the early stages of filming, even joining them on a location scouting boat trip in 2024 from the Roundhouse Birmingham to Galton Bridge. Filming later took place at locations including the National Waterways Museum Ellesmere Port ( @nwmuseumellesmereport ), Gas Street Basin, Netherton Tunnel, Bumble Hole Local Nature Reserve and the stunning Pontcysyllte Aqueduct! Watch the film on Netflix and see if you can spot these iconic waterways. 👀 Images credit: @Netflix #CanalRiverTrust #Netflix #PeakyBlinders #PontcysyllteAqueduct

Volunteers help keep our canals alive. 💙 Every week, people across the country give their time to care for the waterways we all enjoy. From helping wildlife habitats thrive to planting along the towpath and supporting local events, every action makes a difference. This June, as part of The Big Help Out, we’re encouraging more people to lend a hand to nature and discover volunteering on the waterways for themselves. We’re proud to look after canals and rivers that hold fond memories for so many people🥰 For some, they’re a reminder of ‘firsts’ with the little ones, they’re part of bucket-list achievements for others and for Cath & Mike at National Waterways Museum, they’re where they’ve been volunteering together for 50 years. We would love to hear yours! Let us know your most cherished memories of our inland waterways in the comments below 👇

Duck spotting season is here 🦆 Our canals are bursting with wildlife right now, and ducks are some of the easiest to spot along the towpath. If you’re planning a family trip by the water, we’ve created a free duck activity guide filled with colouring, puzzles and fun facts to help keep little explorers entertained along the way. 🔗 You can download it via the link in our bio. #CanalRiverTrust #NatureLovers #WildlifeWednesday #WildlifeAddicts #birdsofinstagram

Bingley Five Rise Locks is the steepest staircase of locks in the country, stepping boats up the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in five dramatic rises. Watching boaters navigate each chamber is part of the experience, with boats slowly climbing higher up the locks. It’s easy to turn it into a full day out. There’s space along the towpath for a walk or bike ride, spots to sit with a picnic, and plenty to keep kids interested. At the top, you’ll find a café and wide views across the Aire Valley, and just a short walk away there’s another set of three locks to explore. If you’ve never seen it in action, it’s well worth the trip. Save this for your next day out and send it to someone you’d go with 💙 #CanalRiverTrust #PlacesToVisit #BeautifulDestinations #Explore_Britain #VisitBritain

We’re carrying out a series of repairs and restorations at Ellesmere Yard in Shropshire, one of the last operational canal yards of its kind 🛠️ As part of the project, funded by a grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, we’re conserving the yard’s rich history and ensuring it remains a living, working part of the canal network for years to come. #CanalRiverTrust #InlandWaterways #Restoration #IndustrialHeritage

Our 2,000 mile network is full of history and sometimes, it leads you straight to a castle 💙 Across our network, you’ll find waterways leading to historic sites like Warwick Castle and Chirk Castle, each with centuries of history behind them. Many are just a short walk from the towpath, making them the perfect stop on your next adventure. 👌 Head to the #linkinbio to read more about the castles that await 😁 #CanalRiverTrust #UKCastles #CanalCruise #TowpathTrails #History

Five years ago, fish returned to a part of the River Severn they had not reached in over a century. For more than 100 years, Diglis Weir blocked their way upstream. Now, thanks to the fish pass at Diglis Island, they can move freely again, reopening miles of river that had been cut off for generations. It is now one of the largest fish passes in the world. If you visit, there is even an underwater viewing window where you can watch fish as they travel upstream. 🐟 #CanalRiverTrust #FishAreFriends #FishPass #RiverSevern #NatureLovers
