The most important component actually arrived in time which is a relief, the motors are all suspended in position. When doing a project of this size the amount of variables really make it nerve wracking, so we’ll take any and every win that comes our way. Tomorrow we should be accepting deliveries of more truss components and start to see it come together!
The motorised truss at CAMVAN is creative infrastructure that has never been available in Victoria until now. Starting this project in November 2024 we’ve had 486 days of design, engineering and construction on the building and the truss itself while working around a studio booking schedule. The crew and teams that understand already what the capabilities are of this installation are salivating in anticipation and so are we.
We’re edging closer toward to having the structural work completed so we can add the motorised truss in Studio One at the start of 2026. There’s a lot of work to do in the next few days!
This is called a ‘Pigtail’ setup if you didn’t know already, it’s especially helpful if you often switch between shooting cards and tethering, or if you’re a Digi and the artist wants to run to the next location with camera they can, without delay.

The structural engineering involved in this project is next level, to make sure that nothing interrupts the normal use of the cyc we really have to go above and beyond with the steel and process.
A 350WC is a welded column, it looks like the letter H laying on its side, and the top and bottom of the H is 36mm thick.
To put in perspective how strong this WC is, the fabricator we’re getting for installation said this: “I install structural steel for huge buildings and factories every single day, and in all my years, I have only ever used a WC like this once and it was to prop up a 14-storey building. This is crazy.”
It’s a 350 WC 258 which means for every 1 meter of length, it weighs 258kgs. For all 14 meters of steel, that’s 3.6 tonne total.
