South Branch Middle Feather was a dream run for me ever since I got into hard whitewater. Couple years ago when the Dixie fire ripped threw this area people told me that the run was going to be ruined for years and it made sense, large burnt trees in a small creek drainage can make access very difficult and the scorched earth wouldn’t retain enough ground water for the creek to rise to a good level. I believe this kept a lot of people away from the creek for many years.
In mid May 2024, we decided to take the risk of getting skunked and we took a drive out there. What we found was pretty good,access was not bad. We made it to Putin and about a mile from the takeout trail and the flow looked perfect! Due to wood on the road we had a little extended hike out and we only had to portage one minor rapid due to a burnt log.
This run has some of the cleanest waterfalls I have run in California, and the average difficulty is on pare with South Fork Silver Creek in the American drainage. I think more people should go do this run. If you like a mission, remote camping, beautiful scenery and pristine California boating, I recommend you go check it out for yourself. Please take extra precautions in this run, there are large waterfalls and slippery rocks. Take your time make safe decisions and enjoy the best of what California has to offer. #cali

The Waterfall Alley gorge is one of the few crux sections on Upper Cherry Creek with some gnarly potholes, consecutive drops and a couple big ones to finish it off.
