A look inside our historic store
•
Established in 1858, Campbell’s of Beauly is an iconic privately owned, family run Highland outfitters. Situated in the picturesque village of Beauly, 10 miles west of Inverness, Campbell’s is a thriving retail business as well as busy tailoring workshop.
•
In an age where in the “rag trade” the all important history and heritage can be easily contrived, Campbell’s has no need or desire to overly hype it’s provenance.
•
Campbell’s name is synonymous with quality craftsmanship and attention to detail.
•
Campbell’s also holds the Royal Warrant to HM The King as tailors and tweed mercers, and historically held warrants to HM The Queen Elizabeth II, HRH Prince Charles, The Queen Mother and The Duke of Windsor.
•
Campbell’s tailoring niche is sporting tweeds and Highland dress, tailoring for many sporting estates across the UK, as well as many a Highland reels dance floor.

While having a clear out in the warehouse, we came across an unopened box from a previous season. Inside was a small batch of our Nordic Ladies Tank, a style we were pleased to rediscover and one that feels just as relevant today.
Crafted in the Shetland Isles from pure Shetland wool, this V neck slipover features a Nordic inspired Fair Isle design and a traditional handle. With a regular fit, it layers easily over a shirt or T shirt and works just as well under a jacket. A reliable piece for spring, offering warmth without weight.
As a style from a previous season, this limited batch has been priced very competitively.

A photograph from another time, capturing a group closely connected to the Graham, or Montrose, line.
From left to right, Lord Ronald Graham, the Duke of Montrose, the Marquis of Graham, the Earl of Dumfries, Mr Campbell Preston, and again Lord Ronald Graham. Figures tied by family, association and shared tradition, each wearing Highland dress in a way that reflects both formality and ease.
Clan Graham, though often associated with the Lowlands, holds a prominent place in Scottish history. Rising to power in the medieval period, the family became firmly established through land, loyalty and military service. Perhaps most notably, James Graham, the 1st Marquis of Montrose, played a central role in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, his campaigns leaving a lasting mark on Highland and Lowland history alike.
The wider circle here also touches on other historic lines. The Earl of Dumfries title connects to Clan Crichton, another long standing Lowland family with roots reaching back to the 12th century. Through marriage and association, these families often overlapped, their histories closely interwoven.
The Highland dress seen here reflects that shared tradition. Kilts, jackets and bonnets worn with a clear sense of purpose, following established forms that have endured.
Traditional Highland dress remains a central part of what we do at Campbell’s. Cut, fitted and assembled with the same attention to detail, and the same respect for the traditions it represents.

The Aigas Field Coat in Rust is the sort of coat that quickly becomes part of everyday life in the Highlands. Lightweight, practical, and quietly refined, it is a piece I return to time and again, whether at the Beaver Lodge at South Clunes or cycling to work on a cool spring morning. Crafted in Italy from soft touch peach skin fabric, it offers the character of a traditional field coat in a lighter, more versatile form, with a breathable, water repellent finish suited to the changing Highland climate. Easy to wear throughout the seasons and timeless in its styling, the Aigas perfectly captures the spirit of country life and enduring rural style.

Spring on the farms, softer skies, brighter knits, and the sweetest little companions 🌿🐑 Our colourful cropped brushed Fairisle sweater is lovingly made in Scotland, bringing together soft texture, traditional craftsmanship, and the fresh colours of the season. Shown here with one of the friendly hand reared lambs from a Beauly small holding, where the wool for our soon to be released homespun throws is sourced, it is a lovely reminder of the close connection between Scottish wool, craftsmanship, and the landscape it comes from.

The brushed Shetland cable slipover is made in Scotland from the finest Shetland wool yarn, offering a timeless V-neck design with a softer, more relaxed character. Cut to a regular fit, this sleeveless style layers easily over a shirt or beneath a jacket, providing warmth without excess weight.
The brushing of the yarn gives the knit a gentler handle and a slightly more casual, contemporary feel, while the traditional cable pattern maintains its classic appeal. Available in a selection of lighter, summery colours, including cricketers white, honey and Nantucket.

A further glimpse inside Campbell’s.
Our meeting room, shaped over time and left much as it has always been. A space defined by its contents, each piece reflecting the character of the shop itself.
The walls are lined with classic field sports scenes, alongside original Vanity Fair prints of sporting dress and Highlandwear. Each one quietly referencing a different part of that tradition, from the field to formal dress.
Below, taxidermy of stag, ptarmigan and grouse sits within the room, adding a sense of place that feels entirely natural. Nothing here is arranged for effect. Each piece has found its position over time.
The furniture, lighting and detail all sit comfortably together, creating a room that feels settled rather than styled.
Full of character. Unchanged in spirit. Distinctly Campbell’s.

A considered Highlandwear look from our made to measure range, built around balance, proportion and cloth.
The kilt is cut in MacLennan tartan. The Clan MacLennan is traditionally associated with the Highlands, particularly Ross-shire, and is thought to descend from the ancient Celtic church, with the name often linked to “Mac Gille Fhinnein”, son of the servant of St. Finnan. Like many Highland clans, its history is one of movement, allegiance and quiet resilience.
MacLennan tartan is most often seen in a balanced mix of greens and blues, grounded with darker tones and lifted by fine overchecks. There are several recognised variations, including modern, ancient and weathered colourways. The modern carries stronger tones, ancient softens the palette, and weathered introduces more muted, earthy shades, each retaining the same underlying sett.
It’s paired here with a kilt jacket and waistcoat in an earthy green gun club check from Fox Brothers. The pattern has its roots in British country dress, developed for use in the field where a mix of greens, browns and ochres provided a natural form of camouflage across moorland and woodland. Evolving from the simpler shepherd check, the addition of coloured overchecks created a more complex pattern that blends easily into the landscape while retaining a smart, structured appearance. Long associated with fieldsports, it remains a staple of countryside tailoring.
The jacket is kept plain, with a clean one button front and finished with stag horn buttons. A straight cut waistcoat maintains a neat, structured line.
A straightforward, well balanced combination.

Tomorrow marks the start of the North of Scotland Cricket Association (NOSCA) season, leaves just coming onto the trees at last, daffodils still out, fresh cut grass underfoot, the sound of leather on willow, long evenings stretching out, and somehow 20 degrees in April up here in the Highlands.
There’s a certain rhythm to these first games, a slower pace, a chance to take it all in, blue skies overhead and a gentle breeze across the ground.
Our new Shetland cricket sweater, made in Scotland, feels right at home in moments like these, built for early starts, shifting skies, and those golden hours at the crease.
Here’s to the season ahead.

The Crofters Blanket, designed in-house and made in Scotland, is inspired by a treasured family piece from our archive. A particular favourite of ours, it began as an old blanket passed down through the family, and has since been carefully reworked into its present form. The brown-bordered houndstooth, now also available in green, is a wonderful old school heritage pattern, traditional in character and enduring in its appeal.
