i primarily made this work as a way to honor the labor of my grandfather and my great grandfather, wanted their work to be seen and known.
This piece is made of photo transfers of the lattice brick wall they built back in the late 1940s. They both worked at the local brickyard in Malvern, Arkansas. The thing that hits me the most, is that I don’t know much about them, but I feel my life, as it is now, is in large part due to their labor. The wall is their strength calcified into form.
I’ve made work about this house in the past and it’s many lives – the site of family reunions, conflicts, and resolutions. The house is still standing, but my family recently decided to let it go.

this is a “portrait” of my late grandma. she loved purple, pearls and her nick name was Big Shot. she was the nucleus of our family.
i wanted to make a work that challenged my assumptions of her. Thinking of her not only as a matriarchal figure, but also as someone who had desires and experiences that i’ll never know
on a side note i love how my sister said at the opening that if my grandma saw it she’d be like “that don’t look nothin like me!”

cameron clayborn - Adam Gordon - Sylvie Hayes-Wallace - Lee Lozano - Sam Moyer - Dala Nasser - Ang Ziqi Zhang June 23 – August 4, 2023
Opening Reception: June 23,
6–8pm
60 Walker Street, New York, NY
Chapter NY is pleased to present a group exhibition including drawings by Lee Lozano and multimedia works by contemporary artists cameron clayborn, Adam Gordon, Sylvie Hayes-Wallace, Sam Moyer, Dala Nasser, and Ang Ziqi Zhang. The exhibition will consider Lozano’s early practice—in particular, her drive to seek and define form—as a jumping off point and inspiration to the living artists in the exhibition. Two drawings from her early tool series center functional implements as bodily and erotically charged subjects. With great emphasis on process, each artist in the exhibition explores the capacity and potential of the creative act. They work within self-assigned rules and parameters to guide their artmaking and recontextualize objects and structures from their physical environments.

excited to announce ill be doin my first performance in ny titled “Meet Me Upstairs” , APRIL 6 & 7 @simonesubalgallery !
see details below :
Headlamps – red, yellow, and blue – make visible the way our thoughts overlap. Then we peel, rip and recalibrate to adjust the grid. With each breath our collective stomachs will rise and fall, untying knots of anxiety and leaving space for new memories.
Performed in the round, Meet Me Upstairs is a self described “sonic psychodrama” that attempts to transform the gallery into a location where lofty, incoherent thoughts can be distilled into a logical structure. The performance will feature movement and props by cameron clayborn, Oscar Chavez, and @hyereemro , and will be accompanied by harp improvisations as well as original music co-written by cameron clayborn and harpist Claire Ritchie
showin some new sculptures and drawings at @felixartfair with @moranmorangallery
if you happen to be in LA please do check it out :)

last pic is a sticky note my partner wrote to me:
“Bronzes on quilt will be the star of the show. these pieces have been on a journey since conception. Journeying in the glove box across the u.s. as clay. Then across the ocean as realized forms”
