“I had already interviewed all the members of the band for a possible Rolling Stone piece, and the days were ticking by. My eyes had become bloodshot from the lack of sleep and resolution. The decision was down to Jimmy Page on whether he would allow the material to be used for a Rolling Stone cover.
The shows began to roll by. In Indianapolis, he was friendly but distant. Each show was topping the previous one as the band found their footing with the new material. Audiences only needed one listen to appreciate “Ten Years Gone,” and of course, “Kashmir,” as they heard future band classics for the first time. The effect was dark and addictive.
Sometimes an entire Led Zeppelin audience seemed to become drugged by their vibe. By Greensboro, Page had started to ignore me. By the next night, he began to look right through me.
He was now aware that everyone had spoken to me for a potential Rolling Stone piece but him. Time was running out on all fronts. Back home, my parents were beyond flummoxed by the delays. I had been on the road with Led Zeppelin for over ten days.
Somewhere over Kansas, I took my shot and approached Jimmy Page directly.
“Why should I,” he countered instantly.”
