what is luxury? 80s second hand LV keepall bag, 90s champion hoodie with Mending Night print and vintage mailman uniform shorts.
We generally buy new clothes to show belonging, avoid ridicule and to feel empowered. We don’t need new clothing production to do this. Instead, we need better fashion and a better culture surrounding it.
I believe there already exists enough clothing and material to create new fashion to meet our needs. And through elevating “old” clothing we can empower people whether they are in garments that have been recontextualized or not.

as a philosophy, i decided that if massive corporations and people with large amounts of liquid capital are going to rip off the ideas of less exposed designers, then the most impactful designs and ideas are the ones that benefit from being copied.
the Mending Night print creates the “idea” of the event in the readers head, changing the shape of reality and whats possible - whether the person attends a Mending Night or not. the goal of the design seeks to A) remind people that things can and should be fixed and B) provide a feeling that the reader can find community in a world designed to alienate them.
the black hole design represents the highest level of “recycling” taking matter from the universe and mending it into one single point until it is ready to create something new again. it also represents a deep feeling in the alienated person, a looming doom that cannot easily be put to words. by seeing this symbol the viewer peers into the sublime, and feels the Recognition of shared emotional experience.

with my latest collection i look to resolve Zizek’s conception of the Lacanian “object petit a” by conceiving of the Fashion Brand not as a producer of end products but as a producer of Action which creates fashion, context and community within a capitalist framework. as it stands a “designer” is someone who decides that thousands of gallons of water and land should be sacrificed so they can produce “their special version” of a clothing item that already exists millions of times over. as a method of capital accumulation it can only lead to domination and abuse of vulnerable people and land. however, by changing the definition (itself a Fashion) of what a clothing line is: we can replace the trap of “buyers remorse” and the cycle it creates with the Action of being involved in positive global change, shared community and innovative artistic decisions which must deal with the local material available. more to follow.

after a year art directing canadas biggest mens magazine - i return to fashion with my latest collection of upcycled clothing. my line titled “Anthropocene” is both a fashion and research project which has been active since 2015, leading to the development of @mending.night - more information to come in the following days. outfit available by request.

my new band plays May 23rd @easy_life_studio debuting over an hour of live rock music which is intended to never exist online. marking the first time Steph and i have played a live show together since opening for Sophie at RBMA montreal 2018. i wanted to focus on exploring music with friends in public as far away from computers and the internet as we could get. inspired in part by jazz & tarot in montreal, the goal is to provide a backdrop to your night that enhances your life without feeding into nostalgia and covers. bridging the gap between modern electronic, dance and our rock sound is dj @shmalcolm whose bookclub and general vibe have inspired me since moving to toronto. tickets available now.
my first film makes it’s world premiere this Tuesday at Cinema Moderne. shot in the Mile End neighbourhood around the theatre with no budget and only my phone and some friends. i hope it inspires other people to do the same.
