I remember the first commercial I ever worked on— location was a water park in Santa Clarita and my call time was 5:30AM. I don’t think up to that day I had ever reported to work that early.
It was one of those where you use a code name to talk about the job and saying the client’s name out loud in front of the wrong person could get you fired.
Luckily I didn’t make such a faux-pas— and I naively started a chain reaction that got me to where I am today.
Often the call time is still 5:30A— but it routinely is even worse— hours you shouldn’t see unless you’re going to do something fun (and driving across town to be first on location isn’t exactly my idea of it).
“Why Do It?” took a big chunk of my Summer 2025— between Barcelona and LA, constantly battling with competing timezones (and my non-existing Spanish— at least I can order a cafe con yelo somewhat successfully now) and running around in all directions making sure we got it all covered.
In not so many words: it’s a lot of stress and mostly a sleepless month high on adrenaline.
The saving grace are all the moments in between— meeting @gerardosesin early (too early) at the corner of the street to get shuttled to location in Spain; walking down the street to look at the sea and take a breather; hiding in improbable corners of a gym and discovering the set below from a new angle; hundreds of extras running towards the camera on a closed off street in the middle of Barcelona; our local crew pulling all the stops to try to get us comfortable in the scorching heat (and the questionable fashion it produces).
