⛳️Crafting the Sound of Elite Golf
Golf is booming, and with record audiences tuning in, the pressure is on to deliver more immersive, captivating broadcast audio than ever before.
In this craft interview, A1s Florian Brown and James Deason drive us through the highs and lows of mixing two of the highest profile events in the global golf calendar - the US Open and Ryder Cup.
“Golf broadcasting is different from other sports. We have 18 different “venues” all playing at the same time; and while they are separate, they are all a part of the larger ecosystem of the event. Every golfer is playing every venue, but at a different time and under potentially different circumstances. No other sport has this dynamic. Calrec’s functionality in routing and generating multiple paths for each of these “venues” is critical. We have to be able to make changes on the fly and the fact that that is easy to do on a Calrec makes them integral to what we do.”

"If you play out the wrong sound effect at the wrong time, everyone at home knows you've messed up."
Come with us as we go behind the scenes at the George Lucas Stage at Elstree Studios, the home of Strictly Come Dancing! With the show broadcast live every Saturday night from late-September to December, the production behind Strictly is both high-stakes and extremely complex.
Part of this complex workflow are the many stings, sound effects and music beds the show relies on, which have to be played out at exactly the right moment. In charge of this task is Grams Operator and Technical Specialist Nancy Wright, who works as part of the wider team at BBC Studioworks, who operate and maintain some of the UK’s leading television studios, including London's iconic Televison Centre.

NBA on NBC’s Ben Majchrzak breaks down how audio is mixed on a live NBA broadcast.
Inside the truck, hundreds of faders are available, but the mix comes down to a few key elements. Announcers stay steady, while effects are brought in and out to follow the action on the court.
Ben’s approach is simple. Less is more. Focus on the ball, react in real time, and let the game drive the mix!
NBA on NBC’s Ben Majchrzak explains how every arena shapes the sound of an NBA broadcast.
Each venue has its own acoustic profile. From crowd intensity to building design and PA systems. Some arenas are loud and energetic, others introduce resonance and buildup that affect how microphones respond.
The mix stays consistent, but the environment changes every night. The goal is to capture the true scale and energy of the game for viewers at home.
NBA on NBC’s Ben Majchrzak showed me how much thought goes into something most of us never question. Crowd sound!
Every mic placement, every pan, even how it folds down to stereo… it’s all intentional.
Multiple crowd mics are placed around the arena and routed across the sound field, some feeding the surrounds for energy, others supporting the front mix.
NBA on NBC’s Ben Majchrzak showed me what it’s really like mixing a live NBA game and it’s intense.
From a truck outside the arena, he’s managing multiple comms (producer, director, AD) while tracking the ball in real time. His fingers follow the play, bringing mics in and out to match the action and shape what millions hear every second.
It’s controlled chaos, but incredibly precise! And when it’s working, you don’t notice it at all, you just feel like you’re in the game.
NBA on NBC’s Ben Majchrzak explains how live audio is mixed during an NBA broadcast.
He’s not just mixing, he’s tracking the ball in real time, riding faders as it moves across the court. Each mic comes in and out to match the action, building a mix that follows the play.
The goal is to recreate the pace, movement, and intensity of the game as you hear it.
