A pointed brush sometimes holds a point more easily than a small broad-edge brush holds its edge at small sizes — I’ve relied on it for commissions on fine furniture, plaques, tablecloths, washi, and more. I want to share what I’ve learned with you.

I get asked from time to time, "are we going to learn numbers in this class?" to which I say, "of course we are"…

I have an upcoming live workshop:
In May, I'll be at the Letterform Archive in San Francisco for a workshop on May 16–17, 2026: Teaching Uncial to Capitals.

Now, this is a place that all letter-loving people should know about and/or visit (even if you are not interested in my workshop) at some point in their lifetime.
They have a great collection of historic manuscripts, plus very rare 20th-century works, both well curated. LFA website
Incidentally, the same week, Takako (slide 2) will be holding a Salon to discuss her works and show her originals.

Rustics are probably the least used of the calligraphic/historical hands (styles) today.
Popular during the same period as Roman Capitals, two offshoots emerged: Uncial and Rustic. Rustic writing on walls was almost graffiti, presumably brush-written, whereas the Virgil (4th century—Codex Palatinus*) — a more formal example. Considered a faster, more economical form of writing capitals. Eventually, we adopted the Uncial, perhaps more relatable, placement of thick and thin strokes. "Historical Scripts" by Stan Knight can offer a detailed description of the Virgil, and Fr. Catichs' "Origin of the Serif" or "The Eternal Letter" (Ed.Paul Shaw) have photos of a famous wall discovered in Pompeii (but now destroyed during the war)
