Unlearning Society’s Script – Part 2
I am the kind of person who, whenever I’m having a conversation and it’s clearly not going anywhere, I simply step back. Not because I’m proud, but because I believe not every argument needs noise.
And recently, I found myself asking this question:
Do we necessarily need to cohabit to make a statement?
I’m not saying marriage is bad.
I’m not saying wanting love or a relationship is wrong.
But do we always have to measure fulfillment by being with someone?
Do we always have to use marriage as the final proof that someone is doing well in life?
This thought came to me while I was praising a friend on her birthday.
I found myself saying things like,
“Only you can be this beautiful, talented, hardworking, and still have such a good heart. Men are blind how are they not seeing this kind of woman?”
And then I paused.
Why was I using men as the reference point for her worth?
Why do we praise women and still tie that praise to whether a man chooses them?
Why can’t we simply tell a woman
“You are amazing. Your future is bright. Your hard work will speak for you. Your value stands on its own.”
Why must a woman’s success always be linked to marriage?
There’s this script society has written that when a woman is doing well, the next line is always
“The man who marries her will be lucky.”
But what if she’s not building for a man?
What if she’s building for herself?
For her peace.
For her purpose.
For her future.
Not everything a woman becomes should be reduced to marriage.
Sometimes, she is simply becoming because she deserves to.

UNLEARNING THE SOCIETY’ SCRIPT AS A WOMAN (PART1)
Life is not a checklist, and it is definitely not one-size-fits-all. Especially as a woman, you do not have to live by the script society has written for you, timelines, expectations, or definitions of success. At the end of the day, we all share one final reality death.
I say this because I got the news of a friend’s passing last Saturday, and since then, I have been questioning so many things. She was someone I met last year, and we had just started getting close. We went out a couple of times, and I got to see the kind of person she was calculated, hardworking, beautiful, and full of life.
Her passing reminded me that life is short and unpredictable. So why spend it trying to fit into boxes created by society? Why live by rules that do not truly serve your happiness?
Live your life in a way that makes sense to you. Be kind. Be intentional. Be present. Because in the end, all we really have is now.
